This Director, Learning & Performance sits within the Nationwide Retirement Institute Sales Development & Training team, leading the BUILD arm of the organization.

In this role, you'll lead and inspire a team of learning professionals responsible for the design and digital distribution of learning solutions across NF sales functions. Additional responsibilities include support for all learning functions, including measurement, consulting, and technology (Learning Management Systems (LMS), Salesforce, video distribution, etc.), as well as collaboration across other business units across Nationwide.

Financial Services background strongly preferred. FINRA Series 6 & 26 required within 120 days of hire.

Compensation Grade: H3

This role is eligible for hybrid work in Columbus, Ohio.

As a Director, you'll lead learning/training activities, including working with business partners, needs assessment, development of instructional materials, delivery and tracking of skill assessment and return on investment. We'll count on you to translate corporate strategies and learning vision into learning strategies based on innovative application of alternative learning solutions, and ensure calibration and collaboration with peers across the enterprise.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:
  • Creates the strategic implementation, priorities, and initiatives for area of responsibility, ensuring consistency with the learning vision, business needs, company goals and strategies. Leads the coordination of training and learning activities.
  • Provides assistance and guidance in the design of evaluation tools and methodologies and ensures evaluation takes place. Evaluates ongoing viability of learning initiatives. Directs resources to best meet strategic intent, business needs and corporate strategy.
  • Creates design and development strategy to meet anticipated business needs based on learning department vision. Directs staff in the design and development of learning solutions and development of curriculum or leadership development strategies. Works across functional and organizational boundaries in the development and delivery of learning requirements.
  • Partners and consults with executive leadership team to evaluate strategic and integrated business planning tools and to determine impact of learning strategies on organizational effectiveness and company results.
  • Markets, educates and communicates with business partners and peers on resources, initiatives and curriculum. Ensures coordination and branding of all training and learning activities.
  • Prepares and manages budget and resources necessary to drive and implement critical initiatives.
  • Partners with business and Learning & Performance leaders across the enterprise to diagnose needs and identify strategic learning or related projects and recommend appropriate actions. Secures sponsors and may participate in projects by identifying trends, strategy or resources to impact the project or company.
  • Manages associates, including performance management, salary planning and administration, training and development, workflow planning, hiring and placement and disciplinary actions.
May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Associate Vice President or Vice President. Leads a team of four or more Learning & Performance professionals.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate degree preferred with emphasis in business, education, psychology or related subject area desired Advanced studies in instructional technology, management, organization development, or the behavioral sciences leading to a master's or doctorate degree preferred.

License/Certification/Designation: Professional certification, such as the Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP), strongly preferred. In some business units, there may be additional regulatory requirements for specific certifications, e.g., FINRA series in Nationwide Financial or progress toward technical designation, such as CPCU or equivalent designation.

Associates must acquire all required federal and/or state licenses/registrations within the time period designated by the business unit. Additional licenses/registrations may be required when new products and services are implemented. If an associate fails to acquire required licenses/registrations within the designated time period, the associate will be ineligible to continue in the position.

Experience: Typically, ten or more years of demonstrated experience in learning technologies technical and professional instructional design. Five years of management experience. Strong facilitation and change management experience required.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Knowledge of behavioral and organization development concepts. Must have broad technical expertise in analysis, design, development and implementation of learning solutions. Strong planning, organizing, leading and process management knowledge required. Knowledge of current policies, practices and trends affecting the business and organization. Able to present and articulate ideas and plans, and build organizational momentum behind strategies. Strong organizational savvy, relationship building skills and consulting ability. Ability to set work priorities and effectively use resources to evaluate and apply problem solving methodology to make sound decisions. Strong leadership, team development and motivation skills required.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager's leader and HR Business Partner.

Working Conditions: May require physical ability to stand while teaching and to move furniture, equipment and supplies around classroom. Potential for travel and non-standard work hours.
