Director of Accounting

OVERVIEW:

Ten Thousand is seeking a Director of Accounting to lead our accounting function. Working directly with our COO, you’ll make sure that we have timely and accurate financial data to guide both day-to-day and long-term operations. In addition, you’ll design and implement systems, processes, and controls to allow our business units as much autonomy as possible while ensuring that all spend remains within budget and in line with company financial targets.

Beyond technical accounting and financial reporting, you will partner closely with all of our functional teams, including Marketing, Merch & Design, and Planning & Supply Chain, to inform better decision-making through financial reporting. In many cases, that will require you to deeply understand our operations and to implement new processes or improve our technical infrastructure to provide actionable, real-time data, instead of waiting for month-end closes.

As our most senior finance and accounting hire, you’ll be an integral part of our leadership team. In addition, while a strong accounting background is essential, this role will also present opportunities to explore projects across FP&A, corporate finance, and/or BI & data analytics. Thus, for the right candidate, the role offers the potential for rapid career acceleration.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Lead our Accounting function and oversee finance operations including financial reporting, tax, AP/AR, and cash management.
• Ensure timely and accurate month-end closes, with the ultimate goal of implementing continuous close protocols to provide real-time financial data.
• Maintain near-term weekly cash flow forecasts.
• Drive continual improvement across all accounting functions, including financial reporting and cash management. Identify opportunities for standardization, automation, and delegating/outsourcing.
• Create, maintain, and enhance business policies, accounting policies, and financial controls.
• Liaise as needed with Planning & Supply Chain team to ensure accurate inventory & COGS accounting.
• Partner with other functional teams, including Marketing and Product teams, to develop policies and procedures to ensure timely and accurate accounting in connection with novel company projects and initiatives.
• Oversee external HR consultant and PEO to monitor payroll tax compliance and to ensure accurate employee comp-related accounting and reporting. 
• Proactively identify areas to reduce costs, increase income, and improve operations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field. CPA and/or Master’s preferred.
• 8+ years of public and private accounting experience. 2+ years of management experience preferred.
• Prior experience with apparel, retail, e-commerce or other manufacturing and inventory-based business model strongly preferred.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, and Quickbooks Online. Prior experience with Shopify and with IMS or ERP systems strongly preferred.
• Top-notch project management and process design skills. Passion for optimization.
• Strong prioritization skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Extreme attention to detail.
• Strong sense of ownership and determination to get things done. Eagerness to learn and grow.
