Pharmaceutical Systems (PS) is a dynamic global organization working directly in a B2B model with pharmaceutical and biotech firms bringing drug delivery combination products to market. The Director, Business Development position is a critical role within PS, reporting directly to the VP, PS Business Development and Strategic Innovation. This role is responsible for identifying, assessing, and conducting evaluations and diligence on potential inorganic opportunities that are in line with the overall strategic growth objectives for the Business. The primary focus of the role will be strategic expansion opportunity assessment and execution of new growth vectors for PS.

About the role:

You will work collaboratively in a matrix environment with other internal functions to assess market potential, strategic and technical relevance, proprietary and legal implications, as well as develop the strategic and financial business case for potential growth opportunities.

Functional activities within the scope of this role include preparing and presenting projects to senior leaders, conducting due diligence of prioritized targets, generating inputs for financial models, and planning integration activities where relevant. The position is ideally located at BD's global headquarters in Franklin Lakes, NJ, but an alternative site within the U.S. will be considered for the right candidate, including the ability to be Remote with some travel to Franklin Lakes, NJ and Grenoble France.

Key responsibilities will include:
  • Work with the VP, Business Development, to lead a world-class business development function aligned with the Business President's vision for PS and BD's overall business objectives. This will entail the responsibility to identify and evaluate acquisition, partnership and licensing opportunities to facilitate inorganic growth of the PS portfolio and business, with primary focus on white space products and technologies
  • Evaluate the market attractiveness and strategic fit of potential inorganic new businesses/markets/domains
  • Utilize financial and market modelling expertise to fully understand and articulate the market dynamics, competitive environment, and overall business opportunity across existing and potentially new market spaces for PS
  • Prepare market taxonomy and/or market space gap analysis and identify specific potential targets for acquisition, partnership or otherwise
  • Within the selected spaces, help manage a funnel of inorganic opportunities, new product or technology platforms, and partnership opportunities
  • Manage primary/secondary market research activities to assess markets and targets, evaluate market potential, analyze differentiating technologies and product leadership positions that will generate targeted revenue. Create comprehensive business case proposals and obtain deal support from PS Leadership Team and BD's broader leadership team
  • Collaborate with the corporate M&A team on transaction details including engagement with external advisors, valuation models, and the due diligence process


About you:

To be successful in this role, you require the ability to think critically in tactical and strategic dimensions simultaneously.

Demonstrated ability to effectively work across various functions to ensure deliverables are met against required timelines.

Ability to prioritize tasks in real-time and exercise judgment in high-stakes environments.

Ability to quickly establish credibility, trust, and support with both internal and external constituents.

Strong ability to communicate effectively with leaders at Senior levels.

Education and experience required:
  • Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA), sciences/engineering, and/or PhD highly preferred
  • Prior experience (5+ years) in strategy/business development, M&A, strategic planning and/or strategic marketing. Healthcare industry, and ideally pharmaceutical industry experience preferred but not a pre-requisite
  • Prior experience in investment banking or at top tier management consulting firms a plus
  • Proven experience in developing new inorganic growth vectors and/or ideating and evaluating new white space opportunities for a Fortune 500 firm
