Reports to: VP of Operations                                                                           Status: Full-time, Salaried

Job Purpose:   To drive overall operational excellence for the department through financial performance, talent development and succession planning, system implementation and optimization, and budgeting and growth strategies. The Director of Café Operations will be responsible for the overall success of the Heads of Area Operations and the pod system.

Summary of duties and responsibilities:


  • Manage the implementation and optimization of all Operational systems
    • Serve as the Operations subject matter expert for all systems including but not limited to, XtraChef, 7Shifts, Toast, Greenhouse, Rise, Bamboo, Monday.com
    • Partner with the Operations team and other departments to increase effectiveness of all existing systems
    • Coordinate with SVP of Strategy and Systems to identify software needs and create action plans for effective roll-outs
  • Manage the systems and structure of café openings
    • Coordinate with Operations and Product teams on vendor setup and initial demand projections
    • Coordinate with Construction team on all inspections and permits
    • Coordinate with Accounting team on pro forma and opening budget
    • Manage system for smallware procurement
  • Partner with the COO, VP of Operations and Finance team to set and track café level and departmental annual budgets
  • Continually assess cafe performance and provide constructive feedback and support based on the Three Pillars of Leadership:
    • Team Development
      • Complete quarterly assessments
      • Partner with the Leadership Training team to drive talent development and regular team communication
      • Audit and encourage the consistent and appropriate application of Coaching and Counseling forms and conversations
    • Community Leadership
      • Facilitate collaboration between Operations and Marketing to ideate and execute impactful events in their cafes and communities
      • Drive awareness and understanding around Saxbys impact mission and B Corp certification
      • Serve as the liaison to Saxbys partner institutions and/or landlords
    • Financial Leadership
      • Review and provide feedback on weekly Key Metrics Reports
      • Manage facilities vendor relationships and set an effective preventative maintenance schedule to drive efficiency and minimize unnecessary expenses
      • Partner with the Accounting team to review and respond to monthly draft Profit and Loss statements
    • Serve as a liaison between Saxbys HQ team and café-level team, by connecting the team to Saxbys Mission and Core Values
    • Hold S.C.E.O.s accountable to the highest level of hospitality and operational standards
    • Manage the pod team’s time management, goals and objectives to ensure S.C.E.O.s are actively and effectively managing the Three Pillars in their cafes:
      • Team Development
        • Hold them accountable to training standards and metrics for all team members
        • Provide feedback on execution of in-café training and team member coaching and counseling
        • Advise on strategies for team development for individual team members and for the café team as a whole
        • Identify exceptional talent for S.C.E.O. or leadership pipelining
      • Community Leadership
        • Hold cafes accountable to the planning and execution of community outreach initiatives that fit within the company’s impact mission
        • Evaluate and give feedback on these café-level marketing strategies developed by the leader
        • Ensure that all product roll-outs and marketing campaigns and promotions are executed effectively
      • Financial Management
        • Hold leaders accountable to managing their Profit and Loss statements and to meeting key financial targets on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis
        • Identify opportunities and institute key performance indicators to meet and exceed sales goals and use operational tools to monitor costs to increase profitability
        • Provide regular feedback based on analysis of key metrics for financial growth of café, including but not limited to, Profit and Loss Statements, Weekly Financial reports, and scheduling budgets

  • Demonstrated success in driving profitability in multi-unit operations in the hospitality or retail industry
  • 3+ years of experience managing a team with varied professional experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Outstanding passion for hospitality and servant leadership
  • Experience managing teams and processes effectively
  • Physical Requirements
    • Able to stand, walk, and smile for extended periods of time
    • Able to stoop and kneel
    • Push, pull, lift or carry up to 35 lbs
    • Ascend or descend ladders, stairs, ramps
