We are looking for a passionate, experienced Director of Data Engineering to join our team. This role will oversee our team of three data engineers while participating directly in data-related projects. The ideal candidate will combine leadership with a strong technical background and a readiness to roll up their sleeves when necessary.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of data engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to hands-on tasks in designing, developing, and implementing scalable ETL pipelines and data processing systems.
  • Create a strategic roadmap for the data engineering team aligning with the company's business objectives and technology capabilities.
  • Work cross-functionally with data scientists, analysts, product managers, and other engineering teams to achieve complex objectives and implement data solutions.
  • Develop and implement data standards, ensuring quality and accuracy of data.
  • Evaluate and incorporate new technologies and tools to improve the data infrastructure.
  • Maintain security and data privacy in all data initiatives, following regulatory and legal requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field. Advanced degree preferred.
  • At least 7 years of experience in a data-centric role with a minimum of 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven experience managing and leading a team of data engineers.
  • Proficient in SQL and experience with a variety of databases and data warehousing solutions.
  • Strong knowledge of ETL tools and procedures, data models, data analytics, and real-time data processing.
  • Familiarity with big data tools and cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex data concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work on-site at Hearst Tower, Manhattan 3 days per week.

In accordance with applicable law, Hearst is required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role if hired in New York City. The reasonable estimate, if hired in New York, is $165k-$185k with annual MBO eligibility. Please note this information is specific to those hired in New York. If this role is open to candidates outside of New York, the salary range would be aligned to that specific location. A final decision on the successful candidate's starting salary will be based on a number of permissible, non-discriminatory factors, including but not limited to skills and experience, training, certifications, and education.
