Director of Development
Job Description
New Visions for Public Schools is looking for a dynamic, experienced leader for our organization-wide development efforts. We are the largest non-profit organization dedicated to improving public education in New York City, with 180 employees and an annual budget of $35 million, and we are growing rapidly. We are lead partner for a network of 71 district high schools, and support more than 1,500 district schools and thousands of teachers, in total serving more than 850,000 students across all grades and all five boroughs of New York City. We also manage nine charter high schools.Â
The Director of Development will oversee strategy and execution of fundraising of all types, ensuring that New Visions has the resources to maintain and expand our support to City schools. We are in a period of expansive growth, and now is a particularly exciting time to join our organization.Â
Core Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead the creation of a multi-year fundraising strategy for the organization, in collaboration with New Visions senior management and Board of Directors
- Develop a strong donor pipeline for the organization, including maintaining significant institutional and governmental support, and expanding corporate and individual giving
- Craft compelling narratives across multiple media that present New Visions programs to a wide range of audiences and potential funders
- Represent the organization, its Board and senior management and engage directly with donors, prospects, governmental and non-governmental partners, school communities, and other constituencies
- Oversee day-to-day aspects of New Visions’ fundraising efforts, includingÂ
- Lead development and cross-departmental strategy meetings to identify and address key fundraising priorities
- Prospect to identify potential funders and assess alignment to organizational fundraising and programmatic needs
- Expand and diversify New Visions’ donor base and pipeline; work closely with key stakeholders to develop funding requests and proposalsÂ
- Monitor progress against grant goals and timelines; lead efforts to complete funder reporting requirements on a timely basis
- Develop strategy for additional fundraising activities, such as annual funds, fundraising galas or other events
- Strengthen and solidify processes and systems in place that track existing grants and pipeline proposals; share findings with program staff with the appropriate level of urgency
- Manage a team of three development professionals, including:
- establishing priorities and goals for the team and track progress
- assigning, overseeing and ensuring the quality of development materials
- building team capacity to take on increasingly significant roles and responsibilities within the development teamÂ
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Ten years of related experience in a nonprofit or in an educational environment
- Five years of management/supervisory experience
Required Skills and Knowledge Base:
- Proven success in fundraising, ideally including experience with institutional, individual, corporate, and governmental funders
- Experience securing and maintaining six- and seven-figure grant awards and stewarding funders to increase giving over timeÂ
- Compelling and comfortable public speaker, able to craft a public narrative and articulate multiple strands of New Visions’ work
- Experience successfully working with Boards and senior management to guide them on best practices to develop and advance a culture of fundraising
- Exceptional writing and communication skills with the ability to simplify complex ideas about our impact using both quantitative and qualitative dataÂ
- Knowledgeable about the education funding landscape, both locally and nationally
- Experience using Google productivity suite, including Docs, Sheets, and Slides preferredÂ
- Experience with Raiser’s Edge preferred

Pay Range
$141,359 minimum to $226,174 maximum
While the majority of new hires’ starting salaries shall be expected to be placed in the first half of the range(s) to allow space to grow in the job, for those who already have significant relevant experience at that level of the job, placement at the higher end of the range(s) is possible.
Our offices are currently operating in a hybrid model, with staff expected to work in person several days per week. We are following New York City’s lead and requiring all staff to be vaccinated. Our plans and policies may change as circumstances related to COVID-19 continue to evolve. Additional details will be shared if selected for an interview.

We operate nine public charter schools in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens and, as a trusted partner of the NYC DOE, we help 1,600 public district schools plan for the success of over a million students citywide. Â In 2021-22, graduation rates in our Charter and Affinity networks were 96% and 92% and our support for postsecondary readiness has expanded exponentially.
