Director of Engineering, New Product Lines

WHY WE’RE LOOKING FOR YOU: 

Retool is changing the way software is built: we’ve developed the fastest way to build internal tools, saving companies time, resources, and engineering bandwidth. Since starting on our mission years ago as a frontend/view builder, we’ve since added products that help developers manage their controller and model layers – Workflows and RetoolDB, respectively. Retool’s multi-product surface area allows our builders to build full-stack apps all inside of Retool, or use the different products on a standalone basis to solve more bespoke requirements. We’re expanding our team and product surface area extremely quickly, and we’re looking for a leader to inherit and build out our new product lines, along with the platforms that power them.

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL:

• Hire and develop your leadership bench alongside the existing managers in the org. Inherit two teams with management in place, a third team with manager to be hired and subsequent growth in the future.
• Take the net-new products we’ve built, each of which have found early product-market fit, and lean into their scale and growth.
• Directly contribute to Retool’s strategy through our new product lines and product platforms.
• Scale our platforms across teams, to all products, optimizing for latency and throughput.
• Understand customers from first principles, bringing insights back to your org to accelerate product development and maximize impact.
• Partner cross-functionally to identify the right targets and goals for each of the efforts, including monetization between recurring and non-recurring revenue streams.
• Communicate and collaborate effectively with product management and product designers.
• Introduce scalable, repeatable processes that help engineering and product teams deliver a successful product.
• Expertly manage and empower a diverse, talented team of engineers. Similarly, partner with recruiting to continue scaling our team.

THE SKILLSET YOU'LL BRING: 

• 5+ years of experience successfully leading and managing teams, with at least 2+ managing managers. 
• A history of orienting teams and setting strategy toward engineering goals, with a bias toward action and impact.
• Deep technical understanding; we don’t expect you to code, but you should be able to navigate our codebase and engage deeply on design and architecture.
• Operating as a business-owner—caring deeply about our customers, product, and teams.
• Experience successfully recruiting, building, and scaling teams.
• A collaborative skillset to partner effectively with product, design, and go-to-market teams.
• Thoughtfulness around engineering culture, process, and identity.
• The proficiency to navigate ambiguity, manage stakeholders, communicate in a structured manner, and drive maximal accountability and excellence.
• A deft ability to champion engineering through macro process changes.
