Director of New Product Development

Hearst Newspapers (HNP) is hiring a Director of New Product Development who is passionate about developing products that serve local readers. The ideal candidate is someone who can understand the interplay of product, content, audience, and innovation. In this role, you'll work closely with a cross-department team on new efforts for the HNP markets that seek to accelerate our growth.

The position will be part of a cross-functional team of editorial strategists, market researchers, designers and developers who will collaborate with local newsrooms to create best-in-class digital experiences. This team will be responsible for identifying new opportunities, building the business cases, get buy-in for the new ideas, and work with the various internal partners on the execution of the idea.

Responsibilities
  • Ideate and lead product development projects efficiently from the discovery through launch phases in a methodical way that aligns with the organization's overall business, operational, and editorial strategy.
  • Turn insights into products- either improvement to our existing business or ideas for net new businesses that we could start or invest in
  • Be able to compile, consolidate and analyze both quantitative data and qualitative research to support decision-making
  • Communicate a clear vision to the teams, peers, stakeholders and senior executives in a way that simplifies complexity and generates excitement.
  • Collaborate with partners across departments and work with stakeholders to conceive of and help define success for new efforts
  • Ability to self-manage and handle multiple projects and fast deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills; comfort providing and taking feedback.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of consumer behaviors, the competitive landscape and technology trends to shape strategic decisions, plans and priorities.

  • A bias toward action can break down complex problems into steps that drive product development.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills; ability to use hard data and metrics to back up assumptions and feature concepts.
  • An understanding of how to navigate the trade-offs necessary to ship quality products on predictable timelines
  • A proven collaborator with experience working in highly cross-functional and matrixed organizations, including working with executives and senior leadership across multiple departments
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills; specifically, the ability to tell the story of the product vision, strategy, and roadmap.
  • Knowledge of the constantly evolving media industry, publishing landscape and the underlying media platforms, business models, audience behavior and a curiosity about where it's headed.If you're passionate about ambitious local journalism, don't hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself. The Basics
  • This position is full time.
  • This position will have a Monday-to-Friday daytime schedule but weekend and evening work may be required.
  • Remote work friendly. The team is based in New York City and San Francisco, but we can employ in 20 other states, as well.
