Director of Product
Job Description
Who We Are
New Visions for Public Schools is an established 30 year partner to New York City public schools, who has continuously worked alongside key leaders to improve the quality of K-12 education in New York City. In the last 5+ years, New Visions has expanded digitally, building modern tools that empower leaders within schools and key influencers across the school system.
Our core product (Portal by New Visions) is a web-based, enterprise school management application, used by educators within schools and across the school system. The application consolidates essential student data into a modern web interface, surfacing key indicators related to student progress. It highlights critical areas where attention is needed on the student level, and contextualizes that information across a school or network of schools.
The role
We are looking for an experienced head of product who will work closely with a passionate, welcoming group of product managers, product designers, engineers, data scientists, and stakeholders to help us continue to scale our core product and expand our impact on equitable student outcomes.
This is an exciting opportunity to drive influence at a mission-driven organization, founded in equity, with ambitious goals to influence a long-established industry. In this role, you will lead the product team in evangelizing our product vision (both short- and long-term), champion product-driven best practices across the organization and participate in solving complex problems for a scaling enterprise application.
Who you are
- You’re an experienced head of product who has led teams of product managers and product designers through scaling enterprise products
- You’re an empathetic leader who is passionate about growing teams and developing and mentoring product managers
- You’re comfortable leading teams in high growth environments and you leverage multiple perspectives and data to drive clarity through ambiguity
- You collaborate with and align stakeholders to your product vision, balancing short term priorities against accomplishing long term goals
- You ground your decision-making in data and deep user empathy. You are constantly looking for opportunities to expand products into new markets
- You build strong relationships with cross functional teams and lead with empathy and conviction
- You have developed a strong skill set and proven track record in leading product teams to build successful products, and you want to use that to accomplish a mission you believe strongly in
What you’ll do
- You will lead a product team with multiple business verticals composed of product managers, designers, engineers, QA engineers, data analysts, and data architects
- You will own and evangelize our product vision in collaboration with organizational leadership, as well as ensure alignment in product vision across product verticals
- You will build and manage an up-to-date roadmap; identifying, negotiating, articulating, and building understandings of priorities and tradeoffs
- You will own product goals and support the leaders of each vertical in creating KPIs aligned to those goals
- You will be responsible for implementing team structures across our department that facilitate our work, ensuring both an efficient use of time and the inclusion of all team members
- Partner with peers and collaborate throughout every level of the organization to assess, iterate and evolve critical organizational processes and to drive innovation and ideation across departments
- You will support the leaders of each vertical to ensure alignment and that each vertical is moving towards our long term product vision
- As an organization leader, you will support colleagues in other departments to understand product-driven thinking
- You are responsible for providing comprehensive professional development, direction and team building to cultivate a team that reflects the values we hold; and advocate for continuous growth and development of reports
What we’re looking for
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, education; or training in a technology or business related field
- 8+ years of experience in product management at technology-driven organizations with enterprise products
- 4+ years of experience managing teams of product managers [and product designers]
- Proven track record of successfully scaling enterprise products and capturing new markets
- Extensive experience with agile methodologies, leading multiple streams of complex work
- Extensive experience throughout the product life cycle, successfully leading multiple products from 0-1 and driving substantial growth for mature products
- Dedicated to using the skills you’ve developed over your career to improving public education for students of all backgrounds
- Committed to supporting a diverse team that prioritizes the equity of voice among all team members
Nice to have
- Experience leading remote/hybrid teams
