Summary:
The Child Mind Institute (CMI) is seeking a Director of Product Design to accelerate the pace of scientific innovation and discovery in mental health and learning. This 3-year leadership position will help CMI, through its partnership with California's Department of Health Care Services (DHCS), enable collaborations that can test, improve upon, and adopt innovative mental health solutions for the benefit of every child, teen, and young adult.
The Director of Product Design will be responsible for leading our product development organization from a design leadership perspective. You will recruit, manage, and lead the alignment of our internal and external design resources. You will also help support our strategic partners across the globe. Working closely with our Program Director, Engineering Directors, and Product Managers you will help define the strategy for our digital products and platforms (30%), lead the UX/UI design and execution of all our products and platforms (40%), and review and approve designs from internal and external resources (30%).
Reporting to our Program Director, this is an exempt, full-time position located in New York or California. A hybrid/remote schedule is possible.

Responsibilities:
- Help define the vision, goals, and business strategy for all digital platforms and products at CMI alongside the Program Director and other leaders.
- Provide design leadership and strategic direction for internal and external design teams, ensuring operational effectiveness.
- Collaborate effectively with key stakeholders, including executive leadership, to ensure alignment of technology and design initiatives with overall business objectives.
- Manage our teams of internal and external designers and researchers with the ability to hire, mentor, motivate, and hold team members accountable for delivering high-quality results.
- Help define and deliver the product roadmap, working with product managers, engineering directors, and external resources.
- Define design principles that establish what good design looks like at CMI, drive good decision-making for internal and external designers, and foster innovation cross-functionally.
- Act as player-coach, with the ability to be hands-on with design without the oversight of a manager.
- Comfortable in a startup, wearing multiple hats while staying focused on the most important deliverables.
- Foster an inclusive and diverse team environment, nurturing talent and providing mentoring and opportunities for professional growth and development for all team members.

Qualifications:
- 10+ years of product design experience implementing and maintaining complex technology products and platforms.
- 7+ years leading design and cross-functional teams.
- Demonstrated expertise in Figma and other design and research tools, accompanied by technical acumen in web and native mobile tech stacks.
- Minimum of Masters Degree in Human-Computer Interaction or equivalent professional experience.
- Experience building scalable design systems, patterns, and principles.
- Familiarity with HIPAA/GDPR/COPPA regulations.
