Director of Quantum Solutions Research

We are looking for a Director of Quantum Solutions Research to lead our technology and business development in utilizing IonQ’s quantum computers to create solutions that bring value to our business partners. As a Director of Quantum Solutions Research, you’ll be part of an entrepreneurial team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to solve the world’s most complex problems using world’s best quantum computers built at IonQ.

Responsibilities: 

• Sustainably grow IonQ’s applications business by developing practical, real-world quantum solutions for customers, while strategically investing in internal tools development and longer-term research
• Originate and deliver highly differentiated quantum solutions that leverage IonQ’s trapped-ion quantum computer technology
• Inspire the quantum solutions team to pursue the highest standards of customer success, quantum innovation and work quality. Build long-term relationships with strategic customers by identifying problems of real-world interest and developing multi-generational quantum solutions that make an impact
• Develop and deploy professional education programs and research partnerships to expand experienced user base for quantum computing and IonQ platform
• Drive hardware-software co-development across the company to enable powerful IonQ quantum computers to make the greatest impact on customers 
• Serve as a gold-standard bearer and direction-setter in quantum computing, to inspire our talented quantum solutions team, the broader IonQ team, our customer network, and the general public
• Work closely with Product Management, Sales, and Marketing teams to expand customer base, optimizing short and longer-term OKRs 
• Collaborate with Product Management and Product Marketing to provide customer insights about product functionality, documentation, and educational material.
• Create strong portfolio of intellectual property in quantum applications and solutions, with a focus on longer-term value creation
• Collaborate with other managers and consistently and effectively communicate across the organization and up the leadership chain

You’d be a good fit with: 

• Experience in technical R&D for solution development in algorithms and/or computational applications
• Experience managing deeply technical teams to develop innovative solutions for customer problems
• Fundamental understanding of quantum computing including ability to identify, prioritize and communicate 1) algorithmic scaling behaviors and tradeoffs, 2) hardware-software co-development across different quantum hardware and 3) optimization of quantum circuits within width/depth/performance envelope
• Strategic view of the quantum applications landscape including investment trends, SWOT of industry offerings and cutting-edge peer-reviewed literature
• Proven track record of technical leadership and innovation in quantum algorithm and/or application development, demonstrated through deployed solutions, commercial licenses, publications and/or patents
• Experience in building, operating and growing business focused on providing solutions to customer problems
• Ability to communicate the potential of quantum computing to a wide range of audiences from students to customers to executives

• 5+ years of experience originating and leading consultative customer engagements

• External presence as an expert in quantum computing (blogs, talks, press)
