A Brief Overview
Directs the management, administration, coordination and provision of perfusion services to patients on a 24-7 basis in order to ensure the timely and competent delivery of quality care for patients and their families. Responsible for management and leadership duties including development and implementation of policies and procedures, service and treatment standards, quality assurance, compliance, patient safety, staff selection, development, scheduling, and evaluation, purchasing and maintaining equipment and supplies, and budgeting.
Cardiovascular perfusion is an allied health science that involves providing extracorporeal circulation to artificially support and temporarily replace a patient's respiratory and circulatory systems. Perfusionists use heart-lung machines and other technologies to maintain the health of patients during heart surgery, Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation therapies, and other medical procedures, working with and under the direction of anesthesiologists and surgeons.

What you will do
  • Patient Care. Plans for the delivery of quality care in perfusion services; develops perfusion service goals, objectives, standards, policies, and procedures; facilitates consensus and adoption of standardized perfusion practice to minimize variation and inefficiencies at the operating unit level; assesses the quality of patient care delivered and coordinates patient care services with patients, staff, physicians, and other departments; identifies opportunities for improvement, to include cost-saving strategies; implements new techniques, systems, equipment and policies to improve the delivery of patient care; reviews and revises policy and procedure manuals and protocols to ensure that they are current; provides expert consultation to staff regarding perfusion; ensures proper and safe functioning of equipment and promotes individual and environmental safety; resolves patient care problems and provides direct patient care as needed.
  • Supervisory functions : Reviews applicants' credentials, interviews, and hires or effectively recommends the hiring of staff; orients and trains new employees; verifies and documents c competency and identifies and suggests ways to improve skills ; provides ongoing performance feedback and evaluates performance of employees; counsels employees in work-related activities and assists them with goal setting, problem solving, and professional development; initiates disciplinary action, including verbal and written reprimands, up to, and including, termination; recommends other personnel actions such as promotions, transfers, etc., to ensure adequate and competent staffing; works closely with Physicians and OR staff to facilitate timely, efficient, and accurate scheduling of staff and equipment; ensures an efficient and effective workflow; assesses learning needs and performs or arranges for training of subordinates; plans, projects, and modifies staffing needs; regularly meets with and communicates operational changes to staff to ensure that they are aware of information that may affect their work; conducts staff meetings; Seeks input and recommendations from staff on ways to improve operations.
  • Leadership: Accountable for departmental leadership including but not limited to employee engagement initiatives, performance improvement initiatives and development of operational and capital budget. Responsible for regulatory, quality assurance and improvement activities; establishes quality measures and standards, and monitors perfusion service in relation to established standards, and takes corrective action to prevent or reduce problems or errors or to improve procedures; communicates and monitors compliance and ensures that all applicable regulatory, licensing, accreditation, and legal standards and policies are met within the scope of perfusion services; ensures appropriate internal and external reporting of both compliance and non-compliance issues arising from surgical scheduling; interprets and administers policies and procedures; provides input in developing the unit budget; tracks monthly budget figures; consults with physicians in the selection of appropriate equipment and resources required for extracorporeal support of patients' circulatory or respiratory functions, determines and justifies needs for systems, supplies and equipment; evaluates new products and may purchase equipment; regularly attends meetings with other units/departments to gather or share information or problem-solve; collaborates with other staff in planning and executing programs for patient care delivery; provides and demonstrates sound clinical leadership and develops support mechanisms for sharing good practice, encouraging and directing innovation in ongoing perfusion development.

Education Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED Met by certification requirement below.


Experience Qualifications
  • Four (4) or more years as a Certified Clinical Perfusionist demonstrating advanced knowledge and proficiency in perfusion procedures.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of supervision.
  • Knowledge, skill, and ability to operate all equipment, devices and monitors used by the perfusion department.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry.
  • Knowledge of cardiac disease, defects and congenital anomalies.
  • Knowledge of organ preservation, sterile and perfusion supplies, such as extra-corporeal oxygenators, tubing circuits and cannulae.
  • Knowledge of pharmacology of blood, fluids and medications administration and interaction with extra-corporeal devices.
  • Knowledge of blood components, plasma composition of the human body in association of support by extra-corporeal circuits and devices.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply Joint Commission standards and protocols of general operating room procedures.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills to reach logical conclusions based on established evidence for routine resource, operational, financial and personnel decisions.
  • Skill in supervising, including planning and assigning work according to the nature of the job to be accomplished, the capabilities of subordinates and available resources; controlling work through periodic reviews and/or evaluations; determining subordinates' training needs and arranging for such training; motivating subordinates to work effectively; determining the need for disciplinary action and either recommending or initiating disciplinary action.
