About the Opportunity 

The Director, Programming is charged with leading overall event programming and managing the Programming team and operations for CGI’s year-round events, and in particular its flagship September meeting. This position will sit on the CGI leadership team and will play a critical role in imagining, designing and implementing CGI’s event programming by spotlighting the diverse leaders, organizations and solutions at the forefront of our biggest global challenges. With a focus on innovation and collaboration, this role will help keep CGI’s events fresh, industry-leading, and action-oriented. In addition, the Director, Programming will ideally bring in best-in-class industry expertise with event planning and management, operations and logistics for a large-scale conference. 

Successful candidates for this role will have experience in conference and event design, will have a global perspective and be excited to engage on challenges facing a diverse set of constituencies around the world. Candidates will also have management experience including developing junior and new to the workforce individuals and be committed to collaboration with colleagues at all levels throughout the Foundation.

Core Responsibilities  

In this role you will work on: 

Direct, design and implement CGI’s year-round programming and Annual Meeting:  

  • Think creatively and inclusively around areas of focus for CGI. 
  • Identify emerging, newsworthy, compelling, and unique content to highlight during CGI events.  
  • Establish internal buy-in and collaboration from various departments and key holders in advancing CGI’s program development. 
  • Author decision memorandums on CGI’s programming for feedback and approval from various Clinton Foundation stakeholders and leaders 
  • Lead efforts to identify and recruit diverse speakers to CGI conferences and events 
  • Lead session development, write session descriptions, plan runs of show and oversee overall program management for large-scale plenary sessions, intimate breakout session, and private roundtable discussions 
  • Be accountable for sessions that include diverse perspectives, are thoughtful in approaching stakeholders and allow for an inclusive atmosphere for varied opinions. 
  • Develop and pilot new/innovative programming formats for CGI conferences events. 
  • Help identify and implement strategies to best spotlight commitment makers and various CGI partners. 
  • Develop and oversee the creation of briefing documents and other speaker briefing materials/collateral. 
  • Attend external conferences and events and maintain a robust professional network of advisors and thought partners that can inform CGI’s program 

Serve as external speaker point of contact in the lead-up and on-site at CGI’s meetings (virtual and in-person): 

  • Conduct briefing calls with senior stakeholders in advance of speaking engagements and on-site during conferences and events. 
  • Liaise with speaker staff and other stakeholders to create positive and inclusive experiences for VIP speakers and program participants  

Manage the CGI program team: This role will supervise 3 or more positions, and is expected to: 

  • Create an inclusive team where feedback is freely shared, and transparency is the norm.  
  • Lead the co creation of goals and expectations for department/team.  
  • Give and solicit feedback from reports and peers regularly as both part of formal processes and informal day to day. 
  • Actively coach and develop your team. Play an active role in the hiring process when needed. 
  • Be the link between your team and other teams, departments and overall Foundation goals, activities and best practices. 
  • Direct and manage several program consultants and oversee their work developing specific sessions for CGI events. 
  • Grow and oversee a best-in-class program department, establish operations and serve as liaison to other Clinton Foundation departments and stakeholders 
  • Oversee and manage a diverse team of program managers and associates including providing feedback, professional development opportunities and leadership. 
  • Oversee and manage program consultants and other external partners, as necessary. 

Partner with other CGI/CF departments on special projects and events: 

  • Partner with Clinton Foundation Development team and other colleagues to create programming for sponsors and donors to CGI/CF 
  • Maintain strategic relationships with CGI program advisors and other key external stakeholders. 
  • Collaborate with Communications and Marketing teams on creative and impactful positioning of CGI events and programs. 

There will be other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications  

What we’re looking for: 

  • Minimum Required: Bachelors’ Degree 
  • Preferred: Professional and/or academic experience in the following areas: public policy, international development, public health, climate or business 
  • Minimum Required: At least 10 years of professional experience in the field in positions of increasing responsibility. At least 1 of those years must have been directing a team or multiple projects or a function.  
  • Preferred: Experience in developing and programming panels and content for large international conferences
  • Significant experience in meeting and event design and facilitation, including relationship building and client services for VIPs, senior government officials, senior corporate executives, and industry leaders in philanthropy 
  • Experience in developing agenda and content for conferences or other large events.  
  • Deep knowledge of international development/social impact landscape, with particular insight into key players and trends  
  • Ability to work in a varying schedule including nights, early mornings, weekends and holidays. 

Compensation & Benefits 

Our best estimate of the compensation range for this opportunity is $125 - 135,000K annually, depending on the experience you bring. This role is not eligible for overtime pay. This range is based on NYC market rates and may be adjusted if you will be working remotely.  We look forward to discussing our compensation pricing strategy, and your expectations, throughout the interview process.
