Job Description

The Director is responsible for developing strategic media relations and communications plans to advance TIAA's business priorities, protect and enhance TIAA's reputation, and drive awareness of TIAA with external audiences. This individual will report to and help support the work of the Vice President of Corporate PR and Communications.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Assist the Vice President of Corporate PR and Communications in raising the external visibility of TIAA's CEO.
  • Develop an external communications program for the Chief Digital and Customer Experience (D+CX) Officer and her team, including helping to prepare and plan for communications activities for a wide variety of external stakeholders, including press, clients, trade organizations, and others.
  • Highlight TIAA as a digital-first and client-obsessed company, showcasing how we serve our clients through financial wellness, advice and analytics.
  • Help enhance the external visibility of TIAA's Chief Marketing Officer.
  • Raise awareness of TIAA's brand campaigns through earned media outreach, particularly TIAA's campaign to #RetireInequality by closing the racial and gender retirement gaps.
  • Partner with the Corporate Social Responsibility team to promote TIAA's commitment to the communities that we operate in.
  • Work closely with the Government Relations team to support TIAA's policy positions on retirement and other important financial services issues.
  • Assist in raising the external visibility of other C-Suite and senior executive corporate leaders, as appropriate.
  • Develop and implement effective public relations strategies that promote TIAA's vision, mission, and key messages.
  • Create the full spectrum of communications materials in support of telling TIAA's corporate story, including messaging documents, press releases, Q&A and senior-leader and subject matter expert platform development.
  • Provide media training to key spokespeople within TIAA and in particularly in the D+CX organization.
  • Act as a key spokesperson for TIAA, representing the organization to the media and other stakeholders.
  • Cultivate, maintain and leverage press relationships with key targets in trade press, mainstream press, business press and local press outlets.
  • Use social media to amplify traditional press programs, reach target markets and develop relationships with online influencers.
  • Monitor and analyze media coverage of TIAA and its competitors, and adjust PR strategies as needed.
  • Identify appropriate metrics to track the success of external communications programs, including share of voice, volume, impressions, tonality, prominence, and other KPIs in order to help position and raise awareness of the results of these programs with internal stakeholders.
  • Work closely with the larger Marketing and Communications teams and key stakeholders to ensure alignment around key priorities, positioning and initiatives.
  • Proactively manage reputational issues affecting TIAA and its clients; collaborate with colleagues to ensure that company-wide issues are addressed and shared with business partners in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements related to public relations.
  • Assist with other strategic and corporate communications as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ year's public relations, employee communications or general communications experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 7+ year's public relations, employee communications or general communications experience.
  • Financial services experience, having served in either public relations and/or employee communications or other communications roles.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the financial services sector, market and competitive landscapes.
  • Experience and comfort functioning as a senior communications counselor for senior leaders on both proactive topics as well as issues management.
  • Experience working with and influencing senior leaders and business partners by providing guidance and direction on communications activities.
  • Critical thinker and self-starter who is willing to work proactively to identify key business priorities, opportunities and threats, and work across teams to implement the necessary solutions.
  • Organized, high-energy individual capable of working in a fast-paced and fluid environment; understanding of when to operate with urgency and/or escalate matters.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.

Base Pay Range: $97,500/yr. - $162,500/yr.

Actual base salary may vary based upon, but not limited to, relevant experience, time in role, base salary of internal peers, prior performance, business sector, and geographic location. In addition to base salary, the competitive compensation package may include, depending on the role, participation in an incentive program linked to performance (for example, annual discretionary incentive programs, non-annual sales incentive plans, or other non-annual incentive plans).
