Position Summary...
What you'll do...
  • As a 'Director of Software Engineering' you will lead a team of talented engineers that develop Fulfillment Management Services platform built largely on an event driven platform implemented via a micro-service architecture. The platform runs in the cloud and uses many technologies and middle ware. You are a hands-on person and key participant in ensuring the right architecture and design for high performance and scalable software applications that meet the needs of millions of Walmart customers and its next generation Supply Chain. You will build and manage a team of Engineering Managers & software development engineers, providing technical leadership to achieve project goals & partner with product management to drive product strategy forward. You will be mentoring the managers and senior engineers in your team and build a high-performance culture. We are looking to bring more intellectually curious individuals who are passionate about technology in general.

  • Define the public cloud strategy such as developing cloud native applications and/or migrating Walmart private data center applications to Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud infrastructure.
  • Work with Java and relate open-source technologies, relational databases e.g. Oracle, non-relational and distributed databases e.g. Cassandra, Cosmos DB & Elastic Search, caching technologies e.g. Couchbase and Memcached, integration technologies e.g. Java Messaging Services (JMS) and Kafka etc. to design and develop robust high-performance and scalable applications for use within the product ecosystem of Walmart.
  • Define architecture and tactical solutions for product development.
  • Apply knowledge of Supply Chain systems and procedures for omni channel fulfillment order management.
  • Help leadership in defining technology vision for the team for each financial year.
  • Evaluate and Execute Proof of Concepts (POC's) for new technologies and transition them to Pilot programs.
  • Gather requirements, define high level architecture, collaborate with senior developers across the team on design. Review and approve the detailed designs
  • Manage/Lead the team to achieve target scope, schedule and cost objectives
  • Drive the execution of large-scale engineering initiatives, business plans and projects across verticals.
  • Work closely with Technical Project Managers to track progress, identify risks and mitigation, provide engineering leadership support for successful delivery of projects and programs.
  • Building a strong team - Provide guidance and mentorship to managers and individual contributors on the team. Invest in building and mentoring a strong team
  • Supervise multiple Engineering Managers and employees (Staff Software Engineers, Sr. Software Engineers, Software Engineer) reporting to the engineering managers.
  • Define the development capacity plan & hiring plan for each financial year
  • Define and execute associate training and development plan, career plan, goal settings, regular performance reviews and feedback, development opportunities, performance appraisal and promotions.
  • Operating with excellence - Set an example in managing to KPIs, delivering excellence, presenting at all levels, and developing yourself and others.
  • Continuously improve, optimize, and identify opportunities for improved software development life cycle.
  • Drive, build and optimize CI/CD (continuous integration and development) pipeline for faster delivery.
  • Recommend and drive implementation of engineering best practices, including use of design patterns, code reviews and automated unit testing.

Minimum Qualifications (Manager's Ideal Candidate Must-Haves (skills required))
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field and minimum 10-12 years' experience in software engineering Or Master's Degree in Computer Science or related field and 8-10 years of work experience
  • Minimum 5-7 years of people manager experience (including managing managers) in driving and retaining a high-performance team.
  • Minimum 6-8 years of experience building highly scalable, high performance, responsive software Applications
  • Highly technical hands-on and an effective people leader
  • Proven industry experience with large scale distributed systems
  • Solid experience with object-oriented and/or event driven systems
  • Extensive experience building services using back end technologies (Java, Spring, Hibernate)
  • In depth knowledge of SQL/No-SQL and database technologies ( Oracle, Cassandra, Hive) and caching solutions (Couchbase/Redis)

Preferred Qualifications (Manager's Preferred Qualifications (3-5 "nice to haves"))
  • Retail/eCommerce experience
  • Attitude to thrive in a fun, fast-paced start-up like environment
  • Experience in production system operations (logging, telemetry, alerting etc.)
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • Has ambition and vigor to add value to a rapidly growing development team

3 years' supervisory experience.
