Director, Software Engineering

Engineering at 84.51° builds software and data solutions that enable our customers and partners to drive value through better understanding of and engagement with shoppers in the digital and physical retail arena. These solutions incorporate big data and data science & analytics using some of the newest technologies and platforms in the industry. What you'll do

You bring technology and people leadership skills together along with business acumen to enable and empower your teams to build great solutions. On our team, you will be in the middle of it all - implementing functionality, architecting our system, squashing bugs, maintaining the health of our code, and continually growing our teams as an engineering leader. The ideal candidate is both forward-thinking and hands-on, has a strong sense of ownership and drive for delivery, and is a good mentor and co-worker. You know what great looks like in engineering and can provide direction or coaching to enable your teams to deliver quality solutions. You motivate, uplift and enable great talent through direct coaching and career development as well as indirectly through connections within the organization. You embrace the desire to constantly evolve, test and learn to iteratively deliver value. You build relationships and work in close partnership with other engineering leaders, as well as cross-functional partners across Product, Design, Data Science and beyond.

To support our technology, you should have:
  • A passion for bringing great products into our world through collaboration and ingenuity
  • A desire to stand hands-on, and participate in shaping the technical direction and architecture of a product
  • Experience with modern engineering practices such as automated testing (TDD), CI/CD, and monitoring / alerting
  • Deep experience delivering highly available, high quality and scalable services in a production environment
  • Strong Experience with distributed systems and architectures

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree typically in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Mathematics, Business Analytics or another technically strong program
  • 5-8 years of experience in a technical role leading and mentoring
  • 2-5 years of experience in people management role or equivalent experience developing talent through leading/mentoring
  • Passionate about growing talent
  • Excellent communication and relationship skills - you can effectively work with engineers on your teams, collaborate with your product counterparts, and easily communicate technical concepts to business & executive stakeholders
  • Experience building and shipping multiple large software products using agile methodologies

Strongly preferred skills/experience:
  • Experience in the AdTech Industry
  • Experience working on distributed or remote-first teams
  • Experience with distributed system performance analysis and optimization
  • Experience with DevOps best practices and tools
