Director, Software Engineering - Video

Scope of Job: As a Director, Software Engineering of Video on the Pluto TV engineering team, you will be responsible for the product development, delivery, and support of our digital products spanning multiple platforms including Web, Apple, Android, Roku, and web-connected devices. A strong candidate is an experienced software engineer working with either web or native application development technologies and methodologies. This role will be responsible for leading the direction of our video experience engineering teams and coordinating across multiple cross-functional, global, agile development teams, etc.
** This is a remote US or hybrid Los Angeles role.
Responsibilities:

• Lead all aspects of Pluto TV's Video Engineering Transcode East, Transcode West, Playout East and Playout West Engineering Managers, their teams and their teams' activities.
• Lead the growth of Pluto TV's multi-layered, internationally distributed Video Engineering department in order to support the rapid international growth of Pluto TV!
• Facilitate communication and collaboration with other Pluto TV teams and key business partners (CMS, Revenue, MAM, etc) to ensure Video Engineering meets their needs.
• Coordinate with Pluto TV's operations teams (DevOps, STE, PRO, etc) to ensure adequate support for all Video Engineering teams and their projects.
• Coordinate with Paramount Streaming Technology's Video Technology Group to ensure proper support for all Paramount and Streaming Technology initiatives.
• Meet regularly with the VP of Video Engineering to keep the Video Engineering department in sync with company goals, objectives and priorities.
• Ensure that Video Engineering properly supports Pluto TV's Agile Trains to achieve Pluto TV's business goals and objectives.
• Oversee the implementation of complex projects and workloads, manage priorities, and maintain high productivity across the department.
• Develop and implement innovative processes, strategies, and methodologies to improve team morale and productivity.
• Employ a data-driven approach to managing the team by determining key engineering metrics, and monitoring and improving those metrics.
• Oversee and ensure the timely hiring, training, and mentoring of all Video Engineering staff.
• Oversee and drive the semi-annual performance review process.
• Recommend semi-annual staff bonuses, merit increases, and promotions.
• Host weekly 1:1's with Team Managers and Team Leads to review staffing needs, project progress and timelines, and to coach and mentor.
• Work with vendors to augment permanent staff with contract resources to meet all business needs.

Qualifications:

• 10+ years of hands-on technical leadership and people management experience
• 10+ years of engineering/leadership experience with a broad background in application development, API development, building and scaling microservices, systems architecture, and infrastructure
• 5+ years of experience developing globally distributed teams of software engineers and managers.
• Experience developing globally distributed teams of software engineers and managers
• Proven ability to work effectively in a remote, collaborative, and distributed team environment
• Demonstrated track record of developing positive relationships, collaborating across teams, developing staff, coordinating multiple timelines, and handling complex, cross-discipline projects.
• Experience designing, developing, and deploying API services/microservices that have high volume and/or broad usage (millions of MAUs) under sustained load
• Experience working as a software developer preferred
• Experience in QA or SRE is beneficial
• Experience in video engineering is strongly preferred
• Experience managing video streaming platform teams is also strongly preferred
• Experience and understanding of Agile SAFe product development methodology
