We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago for a Director, Strategy and Communications on our Publishing and Mission Operations team. This position can be hybrid (working from both office and home), with a schedule to be determined by business needs.
As a Director, Strategy and Communications you will lead and coordinate strategic planning, development, and internalcommunications across all business units in Publishing. Develop and lead anongoing strategic planning process that aligns with the annual budgetcycle. Develop business plans for keyinitiatives through collaboration with multiple functions across Publishing& Editorial. Responsible for clearcommunication of strategies, goals, and initiatives across Publishing.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategic PlanningProcess
- Facilitate the strategic planning framework for the Publishing group, which consists primarily of coordination and collaboration among the Leadership team on new and existing initiatives.
- Develop an annual process of strategic planning & review that aligns with resources requirements for the annual budget cycle.
- As part of Publishing leadership, responsible for the development and attainment of Publishing's annual goals, leads the process to develop goals and track progress.
- Coordinate the development of business plans for new initiatives to ensure a robust review of rationale, costs, risks, and opportunities as well as evaluation of new business development opportunities and product portfolio review.
- Lead external research projects on publishing wide initiatives/impacts, including consistent monitoring of the external landscape.
- Collaborate with the Publisher to develop presentations (board presentations, town hall meetings, etc) and other communication tools for short-term and long-term Publishing strategies and goals.
- Collaborate with the Director Projects & Operations to ensure that strategic development flows efficiently into strategic implementation.
Publishing Internal Communications
- Lead the implementation of internal communication strategies/tactics to ensure clear communication and understanding of the short-term and long-term strategies for Publishing across the team.
- Design, implement and measure a strategy to increase employee communication and engagement across publishing where employees are both connected and informed across Publishing.
- Identify and execute a roadmap of internal programmatic efforts that build on communication.
- Develop strategies to build cohesiveness across Publishing strategy building, reporting, and communication
Staff Management
- Lead, mentor, and provide management oversight for professional staff, responsible for setting objectives, evaluating performance, and developing staff
- Collaborate with Publishing leadership to build a strong Publishing Team focusing on team culture, pipeline development, and embedding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives into the team
May include other responsibilities as assigned
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree (eg, MBA) preferred.
- Minimum 10+ years of demonstrated experience in strategic planning and implementation across multiple functions within an organization. Must be able to constructively coordinate discussion and input among high-level executives across various discrete business units to develop annual plans.
- Minimum 3+ years experience with staff management; ability lead and mentor talent; demonstrated ability to build, lead and motivate teams.
- Proven experience translating organizational objectives into programs and projects which can then be communicated and prioritized across diverse teams.Must be comfortable with a high level of uncertainty/ambiguity in the initial discovery and planning stages with the ability to focus and drive a project to completion.
- Proven experience with collecting inputs from across the organization, including external research, and incorporating information into a concise logical business plan and organization roadmap.
- Demonstrated experience with effective internal communication planning and implementation across multiple business units and audiences.
- Prior experience allocating and managing resources (dollars and headcount) across projects and communicating and evaluating project risks as needed.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required; strong conflict resolution and mediation skills required.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
