Responsible for leading and directing internal surety audits and developing audit strategies for this complex business unit. Oversees the performance of audit projects to ensure underwriting credit policy and processing flows are operating in accordance with underwriting and credit guidelines and authority levels.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Directs field underwriting and compliance audits to include audits of underwriting credit policy and bond policy processing flows for authorization, documentation, timeliness and accuracy.
Plans, schedules, and determines resources for audit projects. Bonds and accounts are selected for audit based on size and risk characteristics using data drawn from Business Intelligence and further refined through desk top analysis.
Supervises preparation and approves audit work papers and audit reports. Takes an active role in driving timeliness and quality, including presenting and discussing audit reports with senior management.
Prepares and maintains annual audit plans for Surety.
Leads communication to senior management regarding issues involving internal controls and credit policy compliance (i.e. Surety credit policy issue and operating compliance).
Determines high risk transactions for bonds and accounts and conducts high level credit indexing profile analysis to assure that credit quality is consistent with expectations.
Monitors business unit efforts to resolve identified control issues and assesses the effectiveness of remediation efforts through follow up reviews.

Typically AVP and above
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
1. Extensive Surety Domain knowledge.
2. Senior-level knowledge of audit practices and thorough knowledge of credit skills in the surety industry.
3. Senior-level knowledge of surety industry credit practices, GAAP, and other complex accounting principals, practices and procedures.
4. Excellent analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to plan, lead, and direct project teams.
5. Excellent interpersonal, presentation, verbal and written communications skills, with the ability to effectively interact with internal and external business partners.
6. Ability to exercise professional judgment and assume responsibility for decisions which have an impact on people and quality of service.
7. Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Business Intelligence and other business-related software.
Education and Experience
1. Bachelor's degree with Master's preferred in a related discipline, or equivalent. 2. Extensive surety underwriting management experience, typically a minimum of ten years of related work experience.
