About the role

We are looking for a Talent Development professional to design, deliver and scale talent programs at Betterment. The Director of Talent Development will play a key role in driving the company’s high-performance culture and will be responsible for implementing an inclusive talent development strategy. With a forward-looking perspective, this individual will help Betterment adapt to new and emerging Talent trends, leverage technology and continually improve Talent development processes and practices. Ideal candidates will have expertise in learning and development, leadership development and diversity programs. 

This role is based out of our NYC office. Below we've reflected the base salary range we would offer for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterment’s total compensation package for employees. 

  • New York City: $145,000 - $160,000

This job may also be eligible for variable compensation in the form of a company incentive bonus.  For jobs based out of our NYC HQ, we require in office attendance Tuesday through Thursday, weekly.

A day in the life

  • Design, develop, and promote learning experiences that support capability-building and organizational growth
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive talent development strategy aligned with Betterment's business goals and culture
  • Partner with HR and business leaders to assess learning and development needs and create learning content based on the needs of the organization
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of talent development programs through metrics and feedback mechanisms
  • Collaborate with external vendors, consultants, and subject matter experts to deliver high-quality learning experiences
  • Stay current on industry trends, best practices, and innovations in talent development and learning technologies
  • Champion a culture of continuous learning, growth mindset, and diversity, equity, and inclusion within the organization
  • Design and deliver high impact learning programs that are based on science and research, use data to maximize learner participation, and take a blended approach to learning that incorporates coaching, workshops, 1:1 sessions, action learning and e-learning
  • Work closely with all stakeholders to build a continuous learning environment that identifies learning needs, develops talent, fosters engagement and supports career growth at all levels of the organization
  • Evaluate, engage and manage external partnerships/vendors to complement our internal learning and development roadmap
  • Create and manage a framework for assessing, measuring and tracking L&D program success

What we’re looking for

  • 8+ years of experience in talent development, preferably in a fast-growing organization 
  • Demonstrated experience successfully building and leading an L&D function
  • Experience in designing and implementing workshops and materials that are engaging and effective in increasing comprehension, retention and application of new skills
  • Strong strategic and systems thinking - able to help others make connections and see the big picture
  • Detail oriented, organized, and comfortable with technology including G-suite and Learning Management Systems
  • Thoughtful and clear verbal and written communication

What happens next

We’ll take a few weeks to review all applications. If we’d like to spend more time with you, we’ll reach out to arrange next steps, which will include 3-4 sets of meetings with your future colleagues.

In the interview process, we’ll look to learn more about your skills, experiences, capabilities, and motivators. Many of our questions will be aimed at understanding how you might operate here at Betterment. Depending on the role, we may ask you to complete a case study exercise or technical assessments, as we want to collect a robust set of data points to better inform our decisions.

On average, it takes us around 3-5 weeks to make a hiring decision, depending on your availability and sense of urgency. As a best practice, we aim to interview at least 2-3 final round candidates before making a hiring decision. Please note that, as we usually receive an overwhelming number of  applications for open positions, we’re unable to offer individual feedback during the interview process.
