About the role:
- Reporting to the VP, Controller North America, the Director Tax will lead and manage the accounting functions for the US and Canada, including financial reporting, technical accounting, tax, payroll, and compliance and risk management. This role will have significant cross-functional exposure and visibility and will collaborate closely with internal and external teams.
- As a member of the finance senior leadership team, this role leads key finance functions for all of North America. This includes:
- Tax Reporting over 8 legal entities covering 2 countries and 300+ tax jurisdictions, including revenues in excess of 1.8B EUR
- Team size: 6+
Key Responsibilities:
- Responsible for overall administration and coordination of the indirect tax compliance function with external tax advisors for 300+ jurisdictions
- Direct & implement tax planning, monitoring developments in jurisdictions and make recommendations
- Direct and oversee risk management strategy, understanding compliance risk and business objectives and balancing both for the business
- Advise CFO & VP, Controller on tax matters and strategies for minimizing compliance risk
- Participate and contribute to platform strategy around tax compliance
- Manage income tax compliance for the companies and its subsidiaries, inclusive of information gathering, return review, and estimated payments
- Monthly and quarterly close activities including tax journal entries, general ledger account reconciliations, and accruals
- Work closely with the parent company on transfer pricing guidance and implementation
- Ensure compliance with year-end tax information reporting requirements (Forms 1099) for various stakeholders (restaurants, drivers, and vendors)
- Coach, mentor and develop skills of team members
- Be the face of tax to outside clients and prospective partners, working closely to achieve business outcomes
- Direct tax audits and indirect state and local tax audits, including coordination with external advisors
- Research tax issues and field tax questions from various members of the Care, Operations, and Legal teams
- Support Legal team and third-party service in maintaining business licenses and state registrations
- Provide business support for the implementation of tax software solutions
- Establish tax strategies in consultation with external firms and guide teams to implement them as recommended.
- Critically evaluate current and/or proposed systems and business processes for tax-related weaknesses and/or opportunities for improvement and support initiatives to change those systems and processes.
- Collect and/or analyze the information required to prepare Canadian tax forms (T1134, T5, NR4, etc.)
- Gather information and help produce responses or analyses for one-time requests made by other members of the tax team as part of tax audits or other ad hoc requests
- Monitor tax developments around sales taxes and work together with finance and the business to ascertain that the company remains tax-compliant
- Assist on special projects if and when they come up
- Ownership and management of tax software
You Should Have:
- 10+ years experience, preferably within a corporate tax role, in public accounting or industry
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Accounting
- CPA preferred and Master's degree in taxation or accounting is a plus
- Understanding of marketplace facilitator laws
- Working knowledge of income tax accounting
- An inquisitive mind and ability to breakdown tax research into a clean format for leaders and other departments to understand
- Ability to pivot between topics and priorities quickly, while meeting deadlines
- Knowledge of Vertex is a plus (or similar tools such as Avalara)
