F&G is looking to hire a Director, Technical underwriting.

Job Summary

The Director, Technical Underwriting drives technical aspects of Underwriting. This position is responsible for monitoring the core technical underwriting functions including building and assuring documentation of all underwriting guidelines and process documentation.  This position will monitor emerging risks due to changes in industry risk assessment practices, regulatory, technological and competitive environment to determine impact on underwriting processes, guidelines and philosophies. This position will also provide overall leadership to create, evolve, monitor and adjust underwriting philosophies, guidelines and procedures to meet needs of product, distribution and expectations of customers.

The Director, Technical Underwriting will report to the AVP, Chief Underwriter and will have 1-2 direct reports

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide thought leadership for and lead initiatives to define, maintain, and implement underwriting guidelines and programs includingdesigning and leading training for these initiatives.
  • Drive research and analysis of underwriting evidence opportunities; recommend and direct implementing those that are cost effective and consistent with transformation objectives.
  • Provide subject matter expertise for projects requiring complex/advanced underwriting knowledge and expertise.
  • Represent underwriting in cross functional teams focused on delivering and enhancing the customer experience. (Sales/Ops/UW/Service; UW/Actuarial/Claims)
  • Act as a Change Leader, working with process owners and stakeholders to implement strategic process changes.
  • Build and maintain high level knowledge across all business areas by staying current on initiatives and challenges/opportunities across the business.
  • Manage the oversight of contestable claims partnering with claims and legal partners. May represent F&G in depositions.
  • Ensure an underwriting approval matrix is maintained for use at each of the outsourced service providers. Underwrites cases requiring referral due to complexity or high death benefit, and second sign cases in accordance with that approval matrix.
  • Lead audit initiatives of underwriting to assure quality goals are met.
  • Support efforts to advance underwriting modernization and continuous process improvement.
  • Collaborate with Actuarial for on experience studies of focus on updating and modifying underwriting programs (such as underwriting requirements new to F&G and/or the life underwriting industry in general) in order to define potential.
  • Periodically and systematically audit third party service provider’s compliance with service level agreements as well as the underwriting policies and procedures.
  • Adheres to company policies and legal requirements regarding sales and product compliance.

Experience and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 8+ years of Life Underwriting experience and 2+ years leadership/management experience.
  • Audit and contestable claims review experience a plus.
  • Experience working with outsourced partners a plus.
  • FLMI and FALU designations or equivalent.

  • Identifies and drives quantitative analysis.
  • Sets, monitors and holds accountability for priorities and goals that ensure objectives are met during the allocated time period.
  • Identifies key issues and define parameters for potential vendor solutions.
  • Sets expectations and promotes conditions that enable team members to deliver high quality work.
  • Maintains industry regulatory knowledge.
