In this role an Associate's degree or equivalent from accredited two-year college or technical school is required. Three years apprenticeship on-the-job training under the supervision of a licensed dispensing optician, a licensed optometrist, or a licensed ophthalmologist; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position will work as part of a team of eye care professionals that includes Ophthalmologists and Optometrists. Fills ophthalmic eyeglass and/or contact lens prescriptions and fits and adapts lenses and frames. Provides excellent customer service including customer needs assessment, while meeting quality standards for services and customer satisfaction evaluations. Maintains high standards of clinical hygiene at all times.

CORE FUNCTIONS

1. Interprets the results of eye examinations, using prescriptions written by Optometrists and Ophthalmologists.

2. Advises patients on frame weights, materials, styles and colors. Recommends lenses, coatings and frames to suit customers' needs.

3. Measures customers to determine suitable types and styles of frames. Measure patients' bridge and eye size, temple length, vertex distance, pupillary distance, and optical centers of eyes, using measuring devices.

4. Prepares orders for glasses and/or contact lenses by checking prescriptions, lens thickness and other specifications.

5. Ensures orders for glasses and/or contact lenses have been processed accurately.

6. Adjusts frames so they fit properly. Heats, shapes, or bends plastic or metal frames to adjust eyeglasses to fit clients, using pliers and hands. Repairs damaged product as necessary.

7. Maintains records of patient prescriptions, work orders, and payments.

8. Performs administrative duties such as tracking inventory and sales, submitting patient insurance information, entering vision claims on applicable vision provider website and verifying claims paid correctly and posting payments in point-of-sale system.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Associate's degree or equivalent from accredited two-year college or technical school is required. Three years apprenticeship on-the-job training under the supervision of a licensed dispensing optician, a licensed optometrist, or a licensed ophthalmologist; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Must have State Dispensing license, American Board of Opticianry Certification (ABO) and National Contact Lens Examiners Certification (ABO-NCLE), if required by state.

Two to three years of experience working in an Ophthalmology/Optometry office is required.

Must be comfortable dealing in close proximity with the public. Must have excellent attention to detail, particularly for interpreting prescriptions and checking lenses. Must have strong communication skills, the ability to explain technical information clearly to customers, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively to patients or team members of the organization.

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra.
