Distributed Systems Engineer

We are looking for an experienced engineer to help us maintain, grow, and improve our in-house distributed data storage service offering. This role will join our Technology Infrastructure team out of either our London, Singapore, Hong Kong, or New York office. 

Jane Street’s systems generate vast amounts of data. Most of that data is transported, archived, and searched for through various large scale distributed systems, including a petabyte-scale Elasticsearch service.

In this role, you will take part in all aspects of running that platform: design, capacity planning, scaling, monitoring, operational support, automation, documentation, user education, and more. We’re looking for someone who can apply their operational experience and in-depth understanding of relevant third-party systems to ensure we deliver a seamless experience to end users at the firm. 

You’ll join a global team of engineers to tackle this work, with support from world-class domain experts across our Data Center, Networking, and Storage teams. This position will also interface with Jane Street’s entire technical stack.

Your contributions to our Elasticsearch offering will have an outsized impact across Jane Street — but it will be your quick thinking, open communication, and keen organization that ensure these systems continue to evolve as our work does too.

• Hands-on experience with large-scale distributed data storage systems (specific experience with Elasticsearch is a plus)
• Willingness to dive deep into technical problems involving both open-source and proprietary technologies
• Basic familiarity with Linux system administration and shell scripting
• Programming experience is a plus
• Organized, able to work independently, shows initiative
• Clear and concise communicator, able to engage well with colleagues of widely varying technical backgrounds
• Humble attitude, willingness to learn
• Fluent in English
