Job Description

At Genentech Research & Early Development (gRED) we have initiated an exciting journey to bring together and further strengthen our computational talent and capabilities by forming a new, central organization - gRED Computational Sciences (gCS). gCS is on a mission to partner across the organization to realize the potential of data, technology and computational approaches that will revolutionize how targets and therapeutics are discovered and developed, ultimately enabling novel treatments for patients across the world. We stand at the beginning of an exciting journey.

The Computational Catalysts group within gCS is a diverse, curious and action-driven team at the intersection of computation, engineering and science with ambition to advance our technical excellence. The focus of the team is on partnering with the informatics and scientific communities to create a computational and data ecosystem that powers scientific discovery and accelerates decision making. We aim to modernize our ability to acquire, store, link, share, find and analyze data across the organization through scalable and integrated solutions that make every data point count. Reporting directly to the VP, Computational Catalysts and as a member of the Computational Catalysts Leadership Team the Domain Head - Therapeutic Discovery will, in conjunction with leadership level stakeholders both within gCS and across gRED, play a key role in co-creating overarching computational strategies and ensuring achievement of high priority outcomes and impact, which will underpin work across the entire Computational Catalysts organization.

The Domain Head: Therapeutic Discovery is a well-established and highly credible visionary and leader who provides strategic leadership to the Computational Catalyst organization, has outstanding collaboration capabilities, and can influence without authority. You will focus on establishing close working partnerships and ensuring alignment with stakeholders in the Drug Discovery Research Organization and with colleagues within the Machine Learning Drug Discovery (MLDD) pillar of gCS. These groups are motivated by the generation of experimental and analytical approaches for developing high quality small and large molecules that will underpin the next generation of drugs developed by gRED. Of late, this area is a key driver of the lab-in-the-loop model, which describes a rapid iteration between experimental data generation and computational models, feeding the computational models with data that allows them to generate better predictions that then inform the design of better and more effective molecules. By building strong relationships with data generators, in Drug Discovery (in both gRED and pRED) as well as with data consumers in MLDD, you will co-create computational strategies, define high priority outcomes and impact, and ensure they are reflected in the Catalyst project portfolio. You will provide matrix leadership to multiple Computational Catalyst teams assigned to efforts in this domain to enable and coordinate achievement of outcomes and ensure delivery of impact for our stakeholders. You will partner closely with other leaders in gCS, gRED and globally in pRED to identify and capitalize on potential synergies between strategies and solutions. You will also be responsible for understanding and articulating stakeholder needs so they are well understood within the Catalysts organization and more broadly across gCS and gRED. Finally, as a member of the Catalysts LT, the Domain Head will be responsible for working with the other LT members and the VP to ensure the successful implementation of the Therapeutic Discovery computational strategies and outcomes, while always thinking into the future to define forward-thinking solutions to address emerging needs.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Strategic leadership and decision making on the high priority outcomes and impact in the Therapeutic Discovery domain and member of the Computational Catalysts LT
  • Defining computational strategies in partnership with our stakeholders in gCS, the Drug Discovery Research Organization, as well as global stakeholders in pRED and across the broader Roche Group
  • Establishing and fostering strong and trusted internal and external partnerships with leaders and stakeholders in Computational Catalysts, gCS and beyond; Could hold a position on other Leadership Teams across gRED
  • Making prioritization decisions (e.g. based on impact) as well as decisions to start and stop efforts
  • Providing inspiring matrix leadership to Catalyst team members and ensuring successful and impactful delivery of outcomes in the Therapeutic Discovery domain
  • Partnering and collaborating closely with other leaders in gCS, gRED and globally in pRED to identify and capitalize on potential synergies across strategies and solutions
  • Acting as a change agent to drive the adoption of new and innovative tools, technologies and methods in order to accelerate impact
  • Influencing a diverse set of senior stakeholders with a wide spectrum of diverse and nuanced needs and expectations in a heavily matrixed and dynamic environment
  • Purposefully collaborating and influencing to support gCS to be at the forefront of our industry
  • Leading by example to establish and demonstrate the culture and working environment of this new organization aligned with our gCS values: impact, collaboration, diversity, scientific excellence and curiosity

Job Requirements:

  • Minimum BS degree; MS or PhD preferred in a scientific or technical field and 10+ years of experience including significant experience leading teams, whether directly or in a matrixed environment
  • Experience forming and cultivating a new team within a complex organizational setting
  • Strong experience and understanding of cutting edge experimental and computational technologies as applied to drug discovery
  • Experience directly or indirectly leading complex, interdisciplinary projects that have many distinct stakeholders and that require the linkage and flow of complex and diffuse experimental datasets
  • Outstanding collaboration and partnering skills with internal and external stakeholders across all levels of the organization
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a collaborative team culture and working environment and role-models shared leadership and co-creation
  • Thrives as a strategic leader through ambiguity, and is able to identify opportunities and bring clarity and pathways forward to team
  • Finesse navigating through difficult conversations/ decisions, especially those requiring alignment and negotiation across multiple stakeholders and functions or departments
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Evidence of the ability to listen to and effectively engage with stakeholders in order and to implement effective and timely solutions and establish successful internal and external partnerships
