COLLINS AEROSPACE seeks visionary, action-oriented people to lead the COLLINS AEROSPACE Digital Product Life cycle's Mechanical Model Based Engineering Factory Transition

As the Digital Mechanical Model-Based Engineering Factory Transition Expert you will be responsible for bringing expertise in industrial practices, tools, and standards during product definition, including associated analyses for design (stress/strain, thermal, flow) as well as for manufacturability (cost, materials processing, tolerance and stack analysis) to the team in the methods and technologies at the interface between mechanical design, manufacturing, and supply chain. More specifically, you will help define projects demonstrating how as-designed, as-planned, as-built, as-inspected, and as-sourced models and data can be used across our enterprise and supply chain to accelerate Engineering design, development, and manufacturing. This role also requires expert knowledge of manufacturing planning, execution, inspection, and associated management systems (ERP, MES). You will collaborate with technical experts from multiple COLLINS AEROSPACE business units and Corporate functions to define and develop clear technology demonstration and implementation plans.

To this effect, you will engage and build relationships with business owners and technology experts from across all COLLINS AEROSPACE divisions in the engineering, operations, and services value streams.

This individual can sit at any Collins Aerospace domestic location or remote.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Review component and assembly design methods, standards, and technologies, focused on addressing the methods and traceability gaps needed to accelerate manufacturability, reliability, quality and maintainability analyses.
  • Evaluate and validate industrial standards (QIF & STEP AP242) development supporting Model-Based Tech Data Packages (TDP) for downstream manufacturing & quality inspection consumption for planning and execution.
  • Work with the team to review and identify state of the art model-based technologies for ingestion into MBE processes for:
  • analyzing producibility and cost on new mechanical component and assembly designs;
  • manufacturing process planning automation, including process monitoring & control plans, and sampling inspection plans;
  • conducting Process Failure Mode Effects Analysis (PFMEA) in product manufacturing process to improve yield, scrap, and performance;
  • conducting producibility analyses on existing design production and recommend process improvement and/or design change to improve producibility.
  • Support the evaluation and recommend applicable industrial standards for:
  • product definition model consumption in manufacturing planning, CAM and CAI programming;
  • manufacturing definition package (mBOM, Bill of Processes, N/C programs, CMM programs, manufacturing work instruction);
  • acceptance data package (as-built manufacturing record, inspection report, etc.)
  • Work with program leadership to establish a product roadmap in the defined areas.
  • Work with the team to develop and drive digital thread demonstrators and reference solutions for correlating data from design, manufacturing processes, as-built inspection results, as well as from supplier manufacturing data and part analyses.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and 12 years of prior relevant experience OR
  • Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 10 years' experience OR
  • In absence of a degree, 16 years of relevant experience is required
  • Engineering/Other Technical Positions: Bachelor's degree (typically in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)) and a minimum of 12 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations.
  • Industry experience with methods and technologies relevant at the interface between design and manufacturing, such as ,Design to Cost, Producibility analysis at different stages (Critical Design Review, Production Readiness Review), CAD, GD&T and tolerance/stack analysis, CAM, First article inspection methodologies and Lean Six Sigma
  • Ability to quickly understand and document complex processes and to communicate them in simple language.
  • Superlative communication skills with experience presenting to senior leadership.
  • US Person or Green Card Holder Required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A PhD degree in Mechanical, Operations, Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering, or Aerospace Engineering with several years of industrial or academic experience
  • Knowledge of enterprise platforms such as PLM, ERP, and MES, Requirements Management and Simulation Lifecycle Management, and QMS
  • Knowledge of modern digital engineering model-based technologies for model-based design (MBD), model-based definition, manufacturing and inspection (MBDMI), model-based systems engineering (MBSE), model-based services and MRO.
  • Familiarity with physics-based modeling software and methods relevant for mechanical design and manufacturing (FEA for stress/strain, thermal, and flow)
  • Familiarity and exposure to problems across the enterprise including engineering, operations, and service/aftermarket.
