Location: Hattie Mae White Department: Reading Academies Area:Northwest Contract Months:11.5 Salary Range: $56,634.00 – $93,447.00 JOB SUMMARY Supports the mission and strategic goals of Houston ISD by providing leadership and expertise in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the district’s reading academies. Employees must have the ability to get from one office/campus location to another. MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES • Manages a cluster of approximately 180 to 300 teachers. This includes working with teachers individually and as a group to provide job embedded support and district staff development. • Provides professional development and support to teachers following Reading Academies Models, Comprehensive or Blended. Provides real-time feedback and access to relevant development opportunities. • Provides critical “on the job” coaching to teachers in support of their professional development. • Works with teachers and Manager, Early Literacy Initiative to review performance data and development plans, and to identify teachers’ strengths and prioritize most pressing development needs to increase student achievement. MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES CONTINUED • Helps to identify and connect teachers to appropriate PD opportunities to meet priority needs. • Monitors teachers’ efficacy in applying new skills and impact on student learning, adjusts approach as necessary to achieve goals for teacher improvement and student achievement. • Performs other job-related duties as assigned. EDUCATION Bachelor’s Degree WORK EXPERIENCE 3 to 5 years of proven successful teaching experience in primary grades as demonstrated by a track record of success in increasing student achievement. Successful candidate will ideally have a minimum of 5 years of teaching experience in the designated subject. SKILL AND/OR REQUIRED LICENSING/CERTIFICATION Expected to obtain TEA Reading Academy Cohort Leader certification within 2 years. Subject matter expert in designated subject - Early Literacy Skills. Texas Teacher Certification Microsoft Office; Office equipment (e.g., computer, copier) Exceptional interpersonal skills, able to relate one-on-one and in groups with confidence and poise. Ability to provide critical and constructive feedback to effect immediate change. Strong communicator, ability to write clearly and analytically, able to evidence support. A problem solver, able to prioritize multiple scenarios. Ability to model research-based teaching strategies. Self-starter, flexible, able to adapt and adjust quickly to changing situations and needs. LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES No supervisory responsibilities. May provide occasional work guidance, technical advice and training to staff. WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT Work is substantially complex, varied and regularly requires the selection and application of technical and detailed guidelines. Independent judgment is required to identify, select, and apply the most appropriate methods as well as interpret precedent. Position regularly makes recommendations to management on areas of significance to the department. Supervision received typically consists of providing direction on the more complex projects and new job duties and priorities. BUDGET AUTHORITY Compiles and organizes data and figures. PROBLEM SOLVING Decisions are made with greater freedom and discretion, including recommendations that are subject to approval on matters that may affect multiple departments across HISD. Job is frequently expected to recommend new solutions to problems, to improve existing methods/procedures/services and generate new ideas. May also review decisions made by other individuals on more routine matters. IMPACT OF DECISIONS Decisions have moderate impact to the facility/department or division, causing increased satisfaction or dissatisfaction; producing efficiencies or delays; promoting or inhibiting personal intellectual or professional development; and/or contributing to financial gain or expense. Errors may be serious, usually not subject to direct verification or check, causing losses such as improper cost calculations, overpayment or improper utilization of labor, materials or equipment. Effect usually confined to the organization itself and is short term. COMMUNICATION/INTERACTIONS Collaborate and solve problems – works with others to resolve problems, clarify or interpret complex information/policies, and provide initial screening/negotiations without approval authority. Interactions are typically with customers, senior level professional staff, and managers. CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS Follows through with customer inquiries, requests and complaints. Forwards difficult and non-routine inquiries or requests to appropriate level for resolution. WORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment which does not subject the employee to any hazardous or unpleasant elements. Ability to carry and/or lift less than 15 pounds.
