The role
Morningstar is looking for an associate designer to support our Editorial group that publishes at Morningstar.com. You'll focus on producing best-in-class illustrations and data visualizations to pair with our industry leading analysis that help individual investors succeed. You'll also contribute to the larger design organization by helping to continuously improve and advance Morningstar's overarching design systems and standards.
You'll be great at:

• Designing data-rich digital experiences that incorporate different mediums to illustrate our research and analysis
• Conducting conceptual explorations that drive thoughtful design solutions, while ensuring the research is understood and applicable to our readers
• Understanding current trends in digital design, especially with regards to editorial considerations and data visualization, and bringing fresh thinking to your solutions
• Solving challenging information and communication design problems and being able to present multiple concepts for consideration, with sound rationale
• Communicating design direction and executional considerations to designers, developers, and stakeholders through high-fidelity prototypes and other artifacts
• Making informed design decisions around typography, composition, color, and other visual elements that support a delightful, engaging experience, while reinforcing the Morningstar brand

We're looking for someone who's:

• Skilled at creating dynamic content experiences that incorporate video, data visualization, and graphic elements, and long- and short-form editorial content
• Able to execute design solutions through all mediums with an emphasis on digital experience design and multimedia
• Able to master complex information, and can translate that information in a way that drives effective storytelling
• Deeply collaborative and can bring the right players together to solve creative problems
• A curious self-starter who isn't afraid of ambiguity, or constraints
• Open to feedback and knows how to defend design decisions
• Continuously striving for better ways of communicating, coaching, and learning
• Comfortable with a fast-paced work environment
• Able to bring energy to a team and keep things positive

Basic qualifications:

• 2+ years' experience designing for web experiences
• A background in editorial design, graphic design, or similar design experience
• Experience working with design systems
• Experience with or an interest in financial topics or investing
• Design facilitation experience a plus
• Strong knowledge of Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, and macOS

Preferred qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in graphic design or equivalent experience/training in the graphic arts
• An understanding of working with content management systems
• Experience working in a deadline-driven atmosphere with a mix of extended and quick-turnaround projects
• Demonstrated experience working for an online content publisher
• A strong problem-solver and able to prioritize tasks, communicate progress and meet deadlines
• Able to effectively take direction and work both collaboratively and autonomously
• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
• Knowledge of HTML and CSS
