Job Description Summary

Administer and implement Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) programs and procedures as directed by the EH&S Manager to resolve a variety of issues. Provide EHS support to BD Associates in order to maintain compliance with facility/corporate EHS policies, agency regulations, and best management practices. Works on problems of moderate in scope where analysis of situations or data to select appropriate methods and techniques for obtaining satisfactory solutions. Perform routine tasks with general instructions and detailed instructions on new projects or assignments. Exercise sound and consistent judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action. This individual will receive minimal direction from the EHS Manager and will add new skills as required to accomplish assigned tasks.

Essential / Key Job Responsibilities (including supervisory and/or fiscal):

  • Aid in the management and administration of all site safety and environmental programs, including Chemical Hygiene/Laboratory Safety, Fire Safety, and Biosafety.
  • Conduct investigations into accidents and work-related injuries or illnesses. Coordinate tracking of cases by maintaining OSHA 300 Logs and corporate incident reporting system. Manage Workers Compensation Claims, including directly managing the clinic and clinic physicians and maintaining continuous appropriate dialogue with WC insurance company. Implement, train and improve the site's Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) as needed.
  • Help manage site's Ergonomics Program. Act as primary liaison to associates and others receiving or requesting ergonomic evaluations. Provide ergonomic evaluations, with little to no supervision, utilizing the latest techniques and equipment available in the industry. Coordinate follow-up activities, track evaluations and equipment orders.
  • Assist in the management of the site's EHS Training Program. Review training program and develop improvements as needed. Maintain the Health & Safety Training database. Generate reports and coordinate scheduling. Provide training on all established required EHS training.
  • Develop, review and update (as needed) written safety and environmental programs, including SOPs and Work Instructions (WIs).
  • Maintain company's chemical inventory and SDS files. Coordinate annual update of chemical inventory with departments.
  • Conduct regulatory evaluations, write reports as required, develop and implement corrective strategies, and report activities to EHS Manager. Develop budget information and assist in the preparing of annual site EHS budgetary information.
  • Maintain applicable site permits associated with EHS issues. Submit permit applications as necessary and play a major role in ensuring all work areas meet Local, State, and Federal regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct quarterly site inspections of all departments including documentation and follow-up in support of the EHS Manager.
  • Administer Hepatitis B vaccine and Tetanus vaccine programs. Duties include scheduling appointments and maintaining tracking database.
  • Act as liaison to Recycling, Bio-hazardous and Hazardous Waste vendor to ensure proper storage and labeling of all waste materials and the scheduling of waste disposal pick-ups.
  • Keeps abreast of the basic requirements for compliance in own area of work and complies with those requirements. Participate as required in training on regulatory issues affecting own area of work. Resolves most regulatory compliance questions/issues on their own, only bringing the occasional question/issue to Managements attention.
  • Ensures EH&S training through facilitating the development and implementation of safety awareness programs. Implement scheduled departmental safety inspections and ensures corrective action for identified hazards. Ensures EH&S policies and procedures are followed through education and training. Discusses and documents pertinent EH&S topics at staff meetings. Participates as a standing member of all Safety Committees.
  • Performs other related duties and assignments as required.
  • Develop, implement and oversee all site safety, health and environmental programs to ensure Federal and State, Local compliance.

Required Qualifications:

  • Familiar with OSHA, EPA, RCRA, Air Quality, and Water Pollution regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize work and establish priorities.
  • Effective customer service skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and time pressures.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to create policies and procedures.
  • Effective analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Must be proficient working with PCs. Requires good command of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, e-mail and the Internet.

Preferred Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:

  • Typically requires a BS/BA in safety or a related discipline and 2-5 years or more related experience working in a laboratory, research, or manufacturing environment with safety and/or environmental responsibilities.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use sight, and use hands to manipulate, handle or feel objects, tools, controls, and office equipment. The employee frequently is required to verbally communicate with other associates. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel or crouch.

Work Environment:
