The Electrical and Controls Engineer, specializing in PLC and Control Systems, is a critical asset in our pursuit of World Class Manufacturing (WCM) projects, with a primary focus on upgrading and enhancing all equipment utilized in window manufacturing. Reporting to the Plant Manager, this role ensures that our processes are efficient, reliable, and technologically advanced, aligning with the mission, values, and objectives of Kaycan, Alexandria Plant. The Electrical and Controls Engineer will also support the plant and company strategic initiatives including capital projects that involve electrical process control systems and provide leadership in the implementation and support of plant automation, electrical and database systems.

  • Reports directly to the Plant Manager.
  • Responsible for ensuring plant-wide safety and strict compliance with all KP Building Products safety regulations.
  • Implement necessary updates and improvements to automation systems to prevent technical obsolescence and maintain optimal performance. This includes staying current with industry best practices and emerging technologies
  • Supervises a team of two Control Technicians, providing guidance and support in addressing complex troubleshooting issues, including emergencies outside regular working hours.
  • Provide technical expertise and support in the maintenance, troubleshooting, and enhancement of automation-related systems, including but not limited to PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, Servo Motors, Servo Drives, instrumentation, and data/voice networks.
  • Utilizes advanced tools and techniques to improve the reliability of our control systems.
  • Manages work orders, procures necessary parts, and prioritizes work orders within CMMS software.
  • Assumes responsibility for all electrical work within the facility, including dealing with contractors for Low Voltage and High Voltage.
  • Schedules and oversees projects, including the preparation of capital expenditure plans.
  • Identifying new opportunities and solutions with cost / benefit analysis and making recommendations to improve efficiencies.
  • Plans, evaluates, organizes, and executes automation and controls-related projects and initiatives
  • Provides training for operators and maintenance personnel.
  • Assures good housekeeping practices following 5S systems, enforces plant rules and safety regulations, and supports WCM initiatives.
  • Travel to other plants when needed.

Working conditions

  • Works within a manufacturing plant environment with limited HVAC, concrete floors, and exposure to industrial noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature fluctuations.
  • Normal plant operations run for up to 16 hours on weekdays. The Control Engineer's work hours may vary based on business needs, which may include working extended hours, weekends, and holidays as necessary to support plant operations and projects.
  • The role may require occasional air travel and car rentals to attend training sessions, conferences, or to visit other company locations.

Physical demand

Job may require long periods of sitting, walking, standing, working on a computer or engaging in telephone conversation. Must be capable of wearing personal protective equipment necessary to comply with government and company safety standards whenever engineered methods of reducing hazards or physical requirements cannot be reasonably accommodated.

Required Qualifications

What do you bring?

  • Post-Secondary Diploma or Degree in Electrical and Control engineering or equivalent.
  • Three to Five (3-5) years of applied professional experience in Electrical, Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) / PLC.
  • Expertise in integrated automation and information systems in a manufacturing environment.
  • Specialize in programming and troubleshooting PLCs from various manufacturers, including Beckhoff, Allen Bradley, and Omron, as well as CNC machines.
  • Flexible, open-minded team player with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving capabilities to work effectively in corporate, manufacturing and team environments.
  • Ability to provide leadership and innovation at all levels of the organization.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
