Engineer I - Materials and Processes Development Lab
What You'll Do:

  • Support multiple physical and chemical laboratories in a variety of capacities including sampling, sample prep, analysis, interpretation of results, and reporting.
  • Perform, support, and lead tasks in a physical analysis laboratories including SEM, SEM-EDS, cross sectioning, metallurgical analysis, hardness, and microscopic examination.
  • Support and lead investigations into new materials for use in aerospace applications.
  • Support and lead failure analysis (physical, chemical, and electrical) investigations utilizing various technologies, offer data-based root cause determination, and provide effective resolution to such investigations.
  • Daily work effort is in support of existing test procedures and development of new test protocols.
  • Develop and maintain Microsoft based databases.
  • Author reports, test procedures, presentations, and specifications.
  • Maintain and repair various test equipment and apparatuses.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.


What You'll Need:

  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 2 or more years related experience.
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master's Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • Degree in Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering preferred.
  • A current, active TS/SCI security clearance is required.
  • Related experience in a physical or chemical testing laboratory preferred.
  • 2 or more years performing failure analysis of electrical components, including sample preparation and SEM inspection preferred.
  • Expertise knowledge of IPC-A-600, IPC-6010 series, etc. required.
  • Expertise knowledge in failure analysis of ICs, Hybrids, capacitors, and other electrical components.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities.
  • Experience in localization techniques required.
  • Expertise in preparation of PWB and electrical component for inspection and investigation, including but not limited to, sample isolation, mounting, polishing, grinding, etching, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of manufacture of electrical components or PWBs.
  • Excellent written and presentation skills necessary to support communication of results and findings during failure investigations and PWB inspections required.
  • Effective demonstrated creativity in failure investigations required.


On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site five days each normally scheduled week in the primary work location. Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.

  • Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or cleanroom, outdoors or remote research environment.
  • May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.
  • May access other facilities in various weather conditions.


Verification that your current security clearance or government customer access meets the requirement for this position will be required.
Relocation for this position is not available.
Compensation & Benefits:

  • HIRING SALARY RANGE: $87,000 - $108,000 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
