The preferred location for this position is Charlotte NC. Raleigh NC, St Pete FL or Lake Mary, FL locations may be considered based upon the selected candidate.

The Engineer II position is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer II position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision. An Engineer II is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer II effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied.

This position will serve as a Subject Matter Expert for the integration and development of standards of DR (Distributed Resource or DER) generation facilities and system line protection and control concepts on the Duke Energy Customer Delivery System within the Customer Delivery Operational and Automation Standards team. The incumbent would work with a group of SMEs within DR CD OAS peer sub team to develop protection, control, automation, and integration standards and provide application guidance for Duke and 3rd party DR facilities connecting to the grid. The incumbent would also partner with SMEs within the team and CD to support integration of Microgrids/Defined Control Areas from the DR Generation integration perspective. The incumbent would also support the development of line protection and control standards, templates, and application guidance for the Distribution System.

Responsibilities
  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of well-defined problems in area of expertise.
  • Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decision that may affect the work of the team.
  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of moderate scope and complexity.
  • Conducts engineering and related studies; projects and assignments are clearly defined with focus on development but must be able to complete routine engineering projects with minimal oversight; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with minimum impact on existing systems.
  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; demonstrates proficiency in technical competencies and has ability to interpret technical information and instructions.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Basic/Required Qualifications

Note: This posting is for one open position. Dependent on relevant experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below.

Engineer II
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Minimum 2 years related work experience
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree

Engineer III
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Minimum 4 years related work experience
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience developing, building, and/or specifying and implementing protective relay settings and templates
  • Demonstrated experience and familiarity with system protection concepts such time overcurrent, over/under voltage, frequency, and symmetrical components.
  • Fault analysis
  • Relay test set operation including COMTRADE simulations/playback
  • Experience with SCADA control protocols, such as DNP, MODBUS
  • IEC 61850 GOOSE, including testing systems utilizing this layer 2 protocol
  • Familiarity with communication control concepts
  • Familiarity with IEEE 1547 standards series
  • Experience developing standards or application documents for major projects
  • Application engineering/Major Project experience
  • Distribution capacity planning experience
  • Distribution field engineering experience
  • Preferred PE certification or ability to obtain PE certification
  • Software: CYME, PSCAD, Mathcad, Simulink or other modeling software


Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.
  • Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.
  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.
  • Experience in the utility industry.
  • Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department.

Working Conditions
  • Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.
