Lilly's Synthetic Molecule Design and Development (SMDD) organization engages in design and development activities for small molecules, peptides and oligonucleotides from pre-clinical phases through commercialization for drug substances and drug products. Our scientists develop technical and business solutions using their deep technical expertise to speed testing of clinical hypotheses and accelerate drug development. SMDD excels in these areas by placing innovation at the heart of what we do. Our innovation engine is driven by an array of diverse talents and cultures brought together in state-of-the-art laboratory and open concept facilities which foster collaboration and teamwork. Lilly is seeking outstanding candidates to work in the SMDD process development group with. The position presents an opportunity to work within a team environment consisting of chemists, analytical chemists, and engineers to advance the portfolio from early clinical development through commercialization.

The responsibilities and opportunities for this role include:
- Develop manufacturing technologies and processes for drug substances.
- Design and execute laboratory experimentation.
- Engage in generating creative solutions for improving existing processes and the creation of novel ones.
- Transfer process technical information to internal and external manufacturing sites. Provide technical oversight to external collaboration partners for laboratory and manufacturing activities.
- Author and maintain documentation such as laboratory notebooks and technical reports.
- Apply fundamental engineering and business principles to design and characterize a process. Use numerical engineering modeling tools to characterize reaction kinetics and mechanisms and process separations.
- Design effective and efficient process and equipment flow strategies, ensuring equipment is selected which is suitable and appropriate for its intended use, given the specific needs of the process.
- Generate engineering-based process scale-up knowledge, both for specific products and unit operations used across a variety of products. Ensure successful scale-up through the use of fundamental engineering principles and equipment knowledge.
- Maintain an ongoing awareness of new technology and best practices. Propose, justify, evaluate, and implement new equipment, processing techniques, and technologies. Create opportunities to use technology to improve safety, quality, and productivity, both in development and manufacturing.
- Publish/share original research externally (peer-reviewed articles and conferences).
Basic Qualifications:
- BS or MS degree in chemical engineering.
Additional Skills/Preferences
- Strong technical skills in organic chemistry with experience as a hands-on technical contributor in a laboratory environment.
- Demonstrated problem solving skills.
- Good communication skills and demonstrated collaborative abilities in a team environment.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple activities and handle ambiguity.
