This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for an Engineering Coach – Health Tech Researchers (Director/VP+) in New Zealand.
This is a unique leadership-to-coaching transition role designed for senior engineering and research leaders who want to extend their impact beyond technical delivery into people development and leadership coaching. You will work 1:1 with senior professionals in high-growth technology environments, helping them strengthen leadership capabilities, improve communication, and navigate complex technical and organizational challenges. The role sits at the intersection of deep technical expertise and human development, particularly in AI/ML, health tech, and other research-intensive domains. You will leverage your experience leading advanced research teams to guide others through ambiguity, growth, and career transformation. Accountabilities:
- Deliver 1:1 coaching sessions to senior engineering and research professionals, supporting leadership development, goal setting, and career growth.
- Coach individuals from technical research backgrounds (including PhD-level professionals) in navigating complex problem spaces and leadership challenges.
- Support members in improving communication, decision-making, problem-solving, and workplace effectiveness.
- Engage in continuous training and development to strengthen coaching skills and apply the Mento coaching methodology.
- Communicate with members between sessions via platform tools, providing guidance and ongoing support.
- Contribute to the coaching community by sharing insights, tools, and best practices to enhance collective impact.
- Act as an ambassador of a supportive, empathetic, and growth-oriented coaching culture.
- 15+ years of experience in senior engineering leadership roles (Director, VP, or equivalent) within AI/ML, health tech, space tech, or similarly complex technical environments.
- Strong background leading research or engineering teams, including experience working with PhD-level researchers and advanced technical talent.
- Deep expertise in AI/ML, large-scale systems, computer science, mathematics, or related technical domains.
- Demonstrated experience in research leadership, with publications, patents, or equivalent contributions preferred.
- Strong people leadership skills with a genuine interest in transitioning into professional coaching.
- High emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and ability to create psychologically safe environments.
- Growth mindset with openness to structured coaching training and continuous learning.
- Comfortable working in fast-paced, evolving startup-style environments.
- Ability to commit part-time engagement over a minimum multi-year horizon (consistent weekly availability required).
