Engineering Director, Augmented Reality
Job Description
The Child Mind Institute (CMI) is seeking an Engineering Director to lead our Augmented Reality (AR) initiatives. This 3-year position will help CMI, through its partnership with California's Department of Health Care Services (DHCS), manage the definition, development and launch of innovative AR products. As part of CMI's research team, our mission is to accelerate the pace of scientific innovation and discovery in mental health and learning, and help foster collaborations that can test, improve upon, and adopt innovative solutions for the benefit of every child.
Our objective is to rapidly develop mental health therapeutics and treatment response monitoring tools for children and adolescents using emerging technologies including augmented reality, AI, and biometrics. This role requires creativity, imagination, and energy to develop, evaluate and scale novel technologies focused on mental health and learning disabilities. This position requires engagement with a broad range of clinicians, researchers, policymakers, and community leaders. Working closely with our Senior Engineering Director, you will help define the strategy for the product (30% of your time), lead the technical design and execution of the platform (40%), and review and approve your team's code (20%).
Reporting to our Program Director, this is a full-time, exempt position located in New York or California. A hybrid schedule is possible.
The Child Mind Institute is proud to be named a Great Place to Work-Certified company! Our competitive compensation and benefits include medical insurance, 401(k), paid parental leave, dependent care, and flexible work schedules, paid parental leave, dependent care and discounted tickets and entertainment perks programs. For more information about our benefits, please visit our employee benefits website.
Responsibilities:
- Provide technical leadership and strategic direction for our engineering team, ensuring alignment with project objectives.
- Manage our external team of engineers (20+) with the ability to hire, mentor, motivate, and hold team members accountable for delivering high-quality results.
- Define and deliver the end-to-end technical roadmap, from back-end infrastructure to front-end mobile applications.
- Collaborate effectively with our cross-functional product development and research team.
- Align technical decisions with our business goals.
- Act as player-coach, with the ability to be hands-on with code without the oversight of a manager.
- Comfortable in a startup, wearing multiple hats while staying focused on the most important deliverables.
- Help evaluate and select 3rd party technical vendors.
- Foster an inclusive and diverse team environment, nurturing talent and providing opportunities for professional growth and development for all team members.
- Be driven by our mission of transforming children's lives.
Qualifications:
- 7+ years of engineering experience, with 3 years developing AR products.
- 5+ years leading and managing an engineering team.
- Minimum of Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience.
- Familiarity with HIPAA/GDPR/COPPA.
Please upload your CV during the application process.

If you are offered employment with CMI, this requirement must be met by your date of hire, unless a reasonable accommodation for exemption is received and approved by CMI.
