Engineering Director, MindLogger
Job Description
Summary:
The Child Mind Institute (CMI) is seeking an Engineering Director for Mindlogger, a platform that empowers clinicians, researchers, and educators to digitally deliver mental health assessments and interventions for children, teens, and young adults. This 3-year position will help CMI, through its partnership with California's Department of Health Care Services (DHCS), build the next generation of the MindLogger platform and manage our engineering team. As part of CMI's research team, our mission is to accelerate the pace of scientific innovation and discovery in mental health and learning, and help foster collaborations that can test, improve upon, and adopt innovative solutions for the benefit of every child.
This is a critical leadership role that spans all aspects of software product development, as well as coding when necessary. You will recruit, lead, and manage our internal and external engineering resources, and help support our content partners across the globe. Working closely with our Head of Product and Senior Engineering Director, you will help define the strategy for the product (30% of your time), lead the technical design and execution of the platform (40%), and review and approve your team's code (20%).
Reporting to our Program Director, this is a full-time, exempt position located in New York or California. A hybrid schedule is possible.

Responsibilities:
- Provide technical leadership and strategic direction for our internal and external engineering teams, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.
- Manage our team of 20+ internal and external engineers with the ability to hire, mentor, motivate, and hold team members accountable for delivering high-quality results.
- Define and deliver the end-to-end technical roadmap, from back-end infrastructure to front-end mobile applications.
- Collaborate effectively with our Senior Engineering Director and cross-functional product development and research team.
- Align technical decisions with our business goals.
- Act as player-coach, with the ability to be hands-on with code without the oversight of a manager.
- Comfortable in a startup, wearing multiple hats while staying focused on the most important deliverables.

Qualifications:
- 7+ years of engineering experience implementing and maintaining complex technology stacks with expertise in Python, React/React Native, AWS, and MySQL/PostgreSQL.
- 5+ years leading and managing an engineering team.
- Minimum of Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience.
- Experience building scalable and performant APIs and data models.
- Familiarity with HIPAA/GDPR/COPPA.
