The Engineering Manager, Global Platform Development is responsible for leading and developing the machine integration engineering technical resources across both new product development and large-scale lifecycle management efforts at Tennant. This position will manage an engineering team providing technical leadership across multiple programs, ensuring best practices across the development lifecycle. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in electro-mechanical systems engineering with emphasis on people leadership and development.

Reporting to the Sr. Engineering Manager, Global Platform Development, this leadership position will lead an engineering team to execute against the Product Engineering strategic vision and framework with an emphasis on robust project execution using systems engineering approaches to support the growth and operational excellence of the team.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of engineers accountable for product design, development, and validation efforts to meet critical customer requirements concerning functionality, cost, performance, manufacturability, reliability and serviceability.
  • Create an environment with emphasis on Engineering Excellence and Capabilities through Systems Engineering approaches and robust technical risk management
  • Partner with Program Management and Product Management leaders in an integrated, cross-functional team environment.
  • Partner with the Platform Leader to drive Platform Based Engineering methodologies within the team while balancing time to market with goals around platform development, reuse, and simplification.
  • Develop relationships with external development partners. Guide and influence architecture choices. Facilitate requirements maturity and tradeoff decisions.
  • Responsible for estimating, assigning, and balancing resources for multiple programs and providing reporting on actuals.
  • Partner with Mechanical, Hardware and Software COEs through a matrix organization to obtain the required skills and resources to support the programs and ensure delivery per plan.
  • Lead and improve reporting methodologies & review forums for better visibility to timelines, technical risk management, and accountability.
  • Support engineering representation on governance boards such as CBT, PSC, & PHM.
  • Select, train, develop and provide performance feedback to department personnel
  • Provide input on design and participate in the research and development of new innovative products
  • Monitor technology trends, competitive threats and industry news and provide synthesis and recommended actions to leadership on regular basis.
  • Develop and implement plans for building and maintaining an effective engineering organization that excels in attracting, training, and retaining top talent. Develop existing and future leaders for future roles within the company.
  • Create an environment of success in engineering through leadership practices such as goal setting, communications, performance feedback, high standards, best practices, innovation, continuous improvement, and team building.

Required Skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to lead, manage and drive rigor to the team responsible for the development of new products and large sustaining efforts.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively plan and manage activities and resources in an Engineering development project.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in fast-paced, innovative, and dynamic environment, including experience in driving cross functional problem solving and issue resolution.
  • Experience negotiating tradeoffs and documenting project requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with internal and external customers, including ability to remove barriers, negotiate tradeoffs, and influence.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide timely and ongoing feedback, training, mentorship to Engineering staff enabling career development of the team.
  • Demonstrated ability for people management/motivation; leads by example and creates enthusiasm about the future of the organization.
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with all management levels, technical and nontechnical.

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in a Mechanical, Electrical, or Electro-Mechanical Engineering discipline with a minimum of 10 years of experience
  • A minimum of 5 years of engineering project and/or people management.
  • Strong project planning / management experiences. Project Management Professional (PMP) a plus
  • Thorough understanding of electro-mechanical design and processes and experience solving large, complex technical challenges and bringing solutions to market.
  • Experience with Stage-Gate or Agile Product Development processes.
  • Preferred experiences in selecting, training, and deploying engineering tools & systems. Examples include tools & systems for managing Requirements, Technical Risks (FMEA), Task/Issue planning and tracking, and Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE)
  • Six sigma black belt preferred.
