Engineering Manager
Job Description
The Engineering Manager has two primary responsibilities; responsibility for leading the overarching practice of engineering within the proprietary business of Quality Bicycle Products (Q) and manage the Engineering team members to the fulfillment of business needs. This position is accountable to make all final determinations of Engineering resources to meet the needs of the prioritized business projects. This role also encompasses the management and prioritization of R&D projects that will advance innovation within our product portfolio.
- Lead and Manage the Practice and Process of Engineering * [35%]
- Guide and assist engineering staff and department in the development of industry & category defining products
- Establish and lead the repeatable and scalable engineering processes and strategies for product development and support (such as DFM, DfMA, FMEA, FEA)
- Work closely with Product Safety (regulatory standards), Testing and field Support Manager (Testing methodologies and Verification/Validation), Industrial Design, and Product Development teams to ensure cross collaboration in the alignment of development activities and timelines.
- Be the thought leader to bring forward greater effectiveness and efficiencies.
- Development of external resources to help support need beyond internal resources including but not limited to CAD/Drafting, 2D/3D Modeling, material experts and full development resources.
- Lead and Develop the Engineering Staff* [35%]
- Work with Proprietary Design and Development Director to manage labor, hiring and team resource planning in alignment with our current and strategic organizational needs
- Provide thought leadership to continuously evolve the team in both organizational structure and methodologies to attain higher efficiencies and effectiveness
- Create an environment where the team has a high level of collaboration, consistently shares learnings, and maximizes mentorship opportunities.
- Working with direct reports, review project priorities and ensure resource allocations within Engineering are established to meet the needs of the business.
- Create the vision for the team and align activities to meet or exceed our business goals.
- Promote continuous improvement through on-going teaching and training opportunities, product quality improvements and process optimization
- Develop and maintain team and individual performance indicators and goals with focus on growth and improvement. Conduct team performance evaluations on a bi-annual basis.
- Manage department budget for pay, pay ranges and the process and requirements for promotions
- Lead and Manage the Practice of Research and Development* [10%]
- In collaboration with the Proprietary Design and Development Director and other key stakeholders, define, lead, and execute the research and development strategy to foster innovation, build customer satisfaction and drive profitable business growth.
- Lead the R&D activities as directed from the department's 'Strategy to Results' documents, other corporate objectives and industry trending to support the evolving needs of the business.
- Recommend and investigate usage of new materials and technologies leading to product innovation
- Work collaboratively with Industrial Design, Product Managers, Testing and Field Support Manager (testing methodology, validation, and verification) and Product Safety (regulatory standards) as needed to move forward relevant findings into product considerations.
- Develop and manage a portfolio of R&D projects linked to key customer needs and product development initiatives
- Form and recommend teams as needed to accelerate R&D practices/projects
- Develop and Manage Necessary Tools and Technology* [10%]
- Owner of the tools and technology road map required for the practice of engineering
- Establish training opportunities for employees to improve and learn new software, hardware, and prototyping capabilities
- Manage and develop the internal and external opportunities for prototyping. This involves rapid prototyping, resources at Q, local machine shops, etc.
*Other tasks and responsibilities as assigned (10%)
- May be asked to act as primary engineer on specific project(s).

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED:
- REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field
- 7-10 years of experience in a high-performance engineering environment
- Experience leading a team in an atmosphere of trust and respect
- Values diversity of opinion but can align the team as and when needed
- Experience in supervision and development of employees and teams
- Strong project management skills
- Ability to manage multiple and complex projects simultaneously
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes: Casting, Forging, Welding, Metals, Carbon fiber, Injection molding
- OTHER RELATED CRITERIA-
- This is a hybrid role, with the expectation of being able to go into the office 1-2 times per week
- Domestic and International Travel
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally approximately 4-6 times a year which includes flying by plane and driving a motor vehicle. Must possess a valid Passport, US driver's license and fulfill the requirements of being a Q approved driver.
