Blue Bird Corporation is a billion dollar school bus manufacturer headquartered in Macon, GA with our manufacturing facilities located in Fort Valley, GA.

Reporting to the Director of Engineering - Body Design, this position will have lead responsibility for all body system and sub-system projects, and work with Blue Bird's supplier partners to drive improvements and launch new products to support the company's growth and profitability objectives. The Manager of Body Design Engineering is responsible for leading a team of mechanical engineers and engineering technicians to deliver technical solutions for current and future school and activity bus products, direct resources to achieve business goals in an accurate and timely manner, and serve as both a leader and mentor for the team.

  • Lead a team of five to eight engineers and a project manager to complete assigned, track metrics, and establish priorities. Areas include, but are not limited to, vehicle body structure, flooring, doors, windows/glass, seating systems, safety equipment, paint/coatings, and HVAC.
  • Collaborates with other functions in Blue Bird to deliver new projects at quality targets, to budget constraints and on time.
  • Leads the team in on-going issue resolution, quality improvements and cost optimization activities.
  • Develops team which includes coaching, goal setting and performance evaluation and feedback
  • Understanding of CAE tools, requirements management and traceability, validation and verification of designs.

  • Delivers solutions that meet program goals, all applicable specifications and quality expectations.

  • Ensures designs meet all applicable Federal, state, and customer requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS):

  • 5+ years of automotive, commercial truck, or bus engineering experience.
  • Supervisory experience of a team of at least five people.
  • Excellent written and oral technical communication skills.
  • Experienced in engineering tools including DFMEA, 8D problem solving, RTVM, Interface Diagrams.
  • Experience working in a vehicle manufacturing facility on new product introductions and on-going issue resolution.
  • Formal Root Cause Analysis Training (Shanin, Blackbelt, Fishbone tools) is a plus
  • Experience working with suppliers on product design, feasibility, quality improvement and cost reduction.
  • Fundamental understanding of engineering development and design release processes.
  • Outstanding work ethic; motivational leadership style.

EDUCATION:

  • B.S. in Engineering, M.S. preferred; prior experience with vehicle body design and integration is a plus.
