Engineering Manager, Application Performance

Managers in the engineering department at GitLab see the team as their product. While they are technically credible and know the details of what developers work on, their time is spent hiring a world-class team and putting them in the best position to succeed. They own the delivery of product commitments and are always looking to improve productivity. They must also coordinate across departments to accomplish collaborative goals.
 The Application Performance team is responsible for optimizing GitLab application performance by managing memory and CPU resources required. The team is also responsible for changes affecting the responsiveness of the application.
As the Engineering Manager for the Application Performance team, you will take overall responsibility for hiring, team management, agile project management, and the quality of this project. This position reports to the Senior Engineering Manager, Data Stores.Â
 This is a remote only position.
 Responsibilities
- Generate and implement process improvements
- Foster technical decision making on the team, but make final decisions when necessary
- Contribute to the sense of psychological safety on your team
- Draft quarterly OKRs
- Hold regular 1:1's with all members their team
- Help your developers grow their skills and experience
- Author project plans for epics
- Run agile project management processes
- Conduct code reviews, and make technical contributions to product architecture as well as getting involved in solving bugs and delivering small features
- Improve product quality, security, and performance
- Actively seek and hire globally-distributed talent
- Conduct managerial interviews for candidates, and train the team to screen candidates
- Exquisite communication: Regularly achieve consensus amongst departments
- Experience in a leadership role with current technical experience
- The team works in Ruby on Rails and Go. While we don't require previous development experience in these areas, it's helpful to understand how SaaS applications are built, and discuss technical rationale and reasoning with your direct reports, in addition to any experience required by the position's specialty

For Colorado residents: The base salary range for this role’s listed level is currently $153,000 - $229,500 for Colorado residents only. Grade level and salary ranges are determined through interviews and a review of education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities of the applicant, equity with other team members, and alignment with market data. See more information on our benefits and equity. Sales roles are also eligible for incentive pay targeted at up to 100% of the offered base salary. Disclosure as required by the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, C.R.S. § 8-5-101 et seq.
