Engineering Manager Data Services

• Lead mentor and manage a team of six backend engineers fostering a culture of ownership curiosity and continuous improvement.
• Remain a technical contributor - using agentic coding tools to prototype investigate and ship code alongside your team not just review it.
• Drive the design and evolution of Canoe's microservice architecture including synchronous REST APIs and event-driven background processing systems.
• Own the full engineering lifecycle for your team's services: from technical design and implementation through production operations and ongoing improvements.
• Collaborate closely with Data Engineering AI/ML DevOps and AppDev as the backend engineering representative in cross-functional initiatives.
• Lead hiring drive the technical bar and build the team over time.
• Manage project timelines surface and remove blockers and ensure a continuous flow of information within and across teams.
• Build observable operationally excellent systems and raise the bar for how the broader engineering organization thinks about reliability and maintainability.

• 7+ years of experience in software development with a strong foundation in backend or microservices systems.
• 2+ years leading engineering teams or serving as a tech lead with meaningful people and delivery responsibility.
• Strong experience building web services in Python including REST APIs.
• Experience with FastAPI (or equivalent Python web frameworks).
• Experience working with AWS services including Lambda.
• Experience working with PostgreSQL and relational data modeling.
• Familiarity with background job processing and event-driven system patterns.
• High agency and a strong sense of ownership - you hold yourself and your team accountable for outcomes not just outputs.
• A track record of working effectively across engineering product and other non-technical stakeholders.
• Genuine enthusiasm for AI-assisted development: you actively use coding agents such as Claude Code or equivalent tools and advocate for their adoption within your team.
• Comfort with ambiguity and a startup-paced environment - you can make good decisions with incomplete information and adapt quickly.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science Engineering or a related field (or equivalent experience).
