Job Description

Team: IT

This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for an Engineering Manager, Data Modeling in Canada.

This role offers the opportunity to lead a high-impact data modeling team focused on building core, reusable data models and metrics that drive decision-making across the organization. As Engineering Manager, you will combine hands-on technical work with leadership responsibilities, ensuring data quality, reliability, and accessibility at scale. You will collaborate with product, analytics, data science, and engineering teams to create durable foundations that support analytics, AI/ML model training, and in-product insights. This is a strategic role where your decisions on modeling standards, architecture, and tooling will directly affect multiple business functions. You will guide and mentor a team of data professionals while remaining engaged in the hands-on development of shared data models. The environment is collaborative, technically challenging, and geared toward long-term impact rather than one-off solutions.

Accountabilities:

  • Lead the design, development, and maintenance of core data models and shared metrics for product usage, customers, accounts, and business KPIs
  • Build and operate foundational data products using SQL, Python, and Spark in a modern lakehouse environment, ensuring data quality, performance, and cost efficiency
  • Define and maintain shared semantic layers and metric definitions to ensure consistent interpretation of data across teams
  • Collaborate closely with Product, Data Platform, Business Analytics, Data Science, and ML teams to understand needs and ensure high-impact, reusable data models
  • Set technical direction for modeling standards, architecture, orchestration (Airflow/Astronomer), and tooling to balance short-term delivery with long-term maintainability
  • Mentor and develop a team of data professionals, fostering best practices in modeling, workflow orchestration, and operational excellence
  • Requirements:

    • 2+ years of experience leading or formally managing data professionals
    • 6+ years of hands-on experience building and owning reusable core data models in modern data platforms
    • Strong SQL and Python skills; experience with Spark and lakehouse environments (e.g., Databricks)
    • Proven experience designing for data quality, reliability, and availability, including workflow orchestration with Airflow or Astronomer
    • Familiarity with SaaS product and customer data models
    • Ability to build foundational models and metrics that support multiple use cases rather than one-off solutions
    • Understanding of performance, cost, governance, security, and compliance considerations for shared data
    • Collaborative mindset with strong partnership skills across Product, Data Platform, Analytics, Engineering, and Data Science teams
    • Interest in AI-assisted development tools to improve data modeling efficiency and maintainability
    • Benefits:

      • Competitive base salary: $120,000 - $150,000, plus bonus and equity opportunities
      • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage
      • Paid time off and paid parental leave
      • Retirement plan with employer match (RRSP in Canada)
      • Wellness benefits and employee assistance programs
      • Remote work flexibility across Canada
      • Opportunity to work on high-impact projects influencing analytics, AI/ML, and business decision-making
      • Collaborative, technically challenging environment with growth and mentorship opportunities
