Engineering Manager, Data Platform
Job Description
We're on a mission to make it possible for every person, team, and company to be able to tailor their software to solve any problem and take on any challenge. Computers may be our most powerful tools, but most of us can't build or modify the software we use on them every day. At Notion, we want to change this with focus, design, and craft.
We've been working on this together since 2016, and have customers like Pixar, Mitsubishi, Figma, Plaid, Match Group, and thousands more on this journey with us. Today, we're growing fast and excited for new teammates to join us who are the best at what they do. We're passionate about building a company as diverse and creative as the millions of people Notion reaches worldwide.
Notion is an in person company, and currently requires its employees to come to the office for two Anchor Days (Mondays & Thursdays) and requests that employees spend the majority of their week in the office (including a third day).
About The Role:You’ll define and implement the strategic direction of Notion’s data platform. You’ll build & lead a team of talented engineers who will design and own foundational data products that are key to the company’s business and product. Notion’s data platform and infrastructure are vital to both empowering every team at Notion to make decisions using data, and are increasingly used in our product features, like search, user notifications, workspace analytics and Notion AI.
What You'll Achieve:- You'll hire, challenge and and retain a diverse, inclusive and highly effective team of engineers; you'll ensure engineers regularly receive feedback and achieve their personal and professional goals
- You’ll build and execute the roadmap for data infrastructure and systems to power high volume product features using Notion’s data.
- You'll oversee the development of tools and infrastructure that democratize data access and enable analytics capabilities across the organization.
- You'll work cross-functionally with partners from the Data Science, Data Engineering, AI, Product, Go-to-Market, Legal and Finance organizations to deliver short- and long-term impact
- You'll work with others to shape how Notion's engineering organization and data ecosystem work — you'll help develop our technical practices, recruiting and onboarding strategy, planning and prioritization process, and more.
- You have lead or managed data or infrastructure-focused engineering teams, particularly ones that own a wide swath of software platforms (hosted or built in-house).
- You've experienced the challenges of scaling and re-architecting data platforms and infrastructure through orders of magnitude of growth and scaling data volume.
- You have a deep background with big data compute, storage, and best practices that you can ask the right questions of your team, balance technology and people concerns, and make hard tradeoffs.
- You have built, or are committed to building, diverse and inclusive teams; you value empathetic and direct communication and foster environments that are at once collaborative, empowering, supportive, and challenging—ones where people do their best work.
- You have worked at a fast-growing start-up or SaaS with high volume data and are eager to contribute in such an environment (being a current Notion user would be great!)
- You have hands-on experience in designing and building highly scalable and reliable data pipelines using BigData stack (e.g Kafka, Flink, Spark, Airflow, DBT, Parquet/ORC, Protobuf/Thrift, etc)
- You have experience leading teams building MLOps and ML serving infrastructure.
- You've heard of computing pioneers like Ada Lovelace, Douglas Engelbart, Alan Kay, and others—and understand why we're big fans of their work.
We hire talented and passionate people from a variety of backgrounds because we want our global employee base to represent the wide diversity of our customers. If you’re excited about a role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every bullet point listed in the job description, we still encourage you to apply. If you’re a builder at heart, share our company values, and enthusiastic about making software toolmaking ubiquitous, we want to hear from you.
