Engineering Manager (Data Streaming)

About the team:

You’ll be joining the Data Platform Team, which is responsible for building the next-generation data infrastructure to support SumUp's data-driven approach, helping millions of businesses thrive. Our goal is to develop reusable tools that enable automated and scalable infrastructure creation for distributed domains. Our team consists of three product-focused subteams:

Data Streaming: Ensures a highly reliable and secure Kafka and Stream Processing Infrastructure.

Data Movement: Manages our Data Ingestion and Extraction infrastructure for various data storage solutions.

Data Gateway: Oversees our Storage and Access Layers, enabling SumUppers to access diverse data needs.

As we guide SumUp toward a self-service, scalable infrastructure, your contributions will be crucial in ensuring the timely execution of data projects by fostering collaboration with various stakeholders. These initiatives empower engineers, analysts, and data scientists to work independently with data resources.

What you’ll do:

• Lead the discovery and collection of technical requirements with Backend, Data, Business, and Leadership teams for real-time data use cases
• Provide teams with insights into use cases and implementation details, drawing on experience with data infrastructure and streaming solutions
• Engage in hands-on work and contribute to the codebase for the next phase of Kafka and Streaming Infrastructure
• Ensure the development of high-quality and reliable infrastructure services by monitoring SLAs
• Facilitate company-wide impact by guiding the adoption of Kafka and Stream processing across different tribes and squads
• Assist the team in efficiently transitioning from Proof-of-Concept to Production
• Support team members in developing their skills and advancing their career progression

You’ll be a great fit for this role if you have:

• 2 years of experience as a hands-on Engineering Manager and 5 years of experience in software development
• Experience in maintaining critical data infrastructure, specifically Kafka and stream processing services such as Flink and Spark, or other stateful distributed systems
• Proficiency in at least one of our primary languages: Go, Python, or Java
• Familiarity with our observability stack, including Grafana, Prometheus, and Honeycomb
• Experience implementing Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles in daily work
• Experience working with cloud infrastructure (AWS or GCP) and networking
