Engineering Manager, Devtools

The Community You Will Join: 

Devtools’ mission is to provide environment and tooling to enable Airbnb developers to develop high quality code quickly and reliably. This team works on providing an developer environment that enables Airbnb developers to be productive across the software development lifecycle. If we can improve productivity by 20%, the impact is equivalent to hiring 20% more developers. The team is currently working on next gen development infrastructure with a huge focus on moving all stages of development from local laptop to the cloud. This includes the end to end development lifecycle with - cloud hosted test environments, remote builds and workspaces/IDE in the cloud.

As an engineering manager on Devtools you will be responsible for shaping the vision,  technical strategy / roadmap and for delivering industry leading solutions that scale with the needs of our engineering teams. Products built by Devtools define how development is done at Airbnb. You’ll have the opportunity to engage with and influence senior technical leaders across the company.  You will bring a strong perspective that inspires change and motivates engineers to develop simple solutions to complex problems. A Typical Day: 

• Deliver software products that delight our customers and accelerate our business growth
• Be conversant in systems design/architecture, can reason about trade-offs, and ultimately own & defend technical decisions / technical direction for your team
• Have the technical capacity to partner with tech leads and are comfortable helping drive incident resolution. 
• Empower the team to achieve a high level of productivity, reliability and simplicity 
• Hire and retain a team of high-performing engineers
• Manage and mentor a team of engineers and be the guardian of our architecture
• Stays current on leading industry trends

Your Expertise:

• 3+ years of engineering management experience, with 9+ years of relevant software development industry experience in a fast paced tech environment
• BS, MS or PhD in CS or related field
• Technical leadership: hands on experience leading project teams and setting technical direction and strategy
• Strong communication and collaboration skills. Examples of working across teams and organizations on technical initiatives.
• Retained, mentored and hired senior engineers
• Effectively worked with senior leadership in setting strategic 6+ month direction.
• Experience with effectively creating alignments with multiple teams and operating well in ambiguity 
• Track record in partnering with recruiting to build incredible engineering teams
• Actively coached and mentored team members in their careers
• Been actively involved in setting product strategy
• Made culture choices that positively impact all of engineering
• Shipped several large scale projects with multiple dependencies across teams
• You are passionate about efficiency, availability, technical quality and system quality.

How We'll Take Care of You:

Our job titles may span more than one career level. The starting base pay for this role is between $200,000 and $254,000. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. This role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.  

Your Location:

This position is US - Remote Eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed to with your manager.
