About the Role:

The New York Times is looking for an Engineering Manager, Games reporting into Head of Engineering, Games. You will lead a team of engineers working across functions to deliver and maintain the premier destination for digital puzzle games.

This is a hybrid role based in our New York City headquarters.

How We Work:
We push code to production and improve the speed of delivery without compromising on quality. We generally build APIs in Go, web applications in Node.js, and web front-ends in React with accessible, semantic HTML and SCSS, and use a mix of Swift, Objective-C, Kotlin and Java in our native apps. Engineering Managers motivate and guide teams to deliver high-quality work on time, and aligning their team members with our goals, creating a culture and processes that keep developers productive.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage around 7-8 engineers ranging in career level
  • Help inspire creativity and technical growth on the team
  • Foster an environment that boosts productivity and collaboration
  • Develop people and teams through coaching, mentoring and feedback
  • Work with product owners, project managers, and other partners to deliver compelling puzzles and games
  • Represent engineering needs when determining the product's roadmap
  • Help establish and advocate for engineering best practices
  • Work with other managers throughout the organization on cross-team projects

Basic Qualifications:

  • 1+ years of experience managing engineering teams building high traffic web applications
  • 2+ years of hands on experience building web applications in React.js or an equivalent framework
  • 7+ years of software engineering experience as an individual contributor
  • Understanding of the core technologies and engineering challenges facing web and native app development
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for mentoring and motivating members of your team
  • Experience using open-ended questions as tools to coach your engineers and advocacy for continuous improvement and learning

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technology experience in Gaming industry

The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$152,000$180,000 USD
