Mission Overview & Responsibilities: The Messaging Platform group is at the heart of messaging at The New York Times. Our mission is to create and maintain multiple messaging platforms and capabilities that deliver the right message at the right time to foster deep connections with people trying to understand the world. This work is key to driving customer acquisition, engagement, and reader loyalty.
We do this by providing data-driven insights, user-friendly tooling, and cutting-edge technology that empowers our editorial and business teams to send highly personalized communications at the speed of breaking news.
We are looking for an Engineering Manager to join the Messaging Platforms group and lead one of our two messaging teams. This is a cross-functional team of backend, front-end, and data-heavy engineers focused on supporting centralized audience management and targeting tools that will serve multiple stakeholders across editorial and business. The features and capabilities managed by the team will integrate with both our in-house messaging platform and Responsys, a 3rd-party messaging platforms vendor.
What You'll Do:
- You will manage a team of 5-8 cross-functional engineers, ranging in experience levels
- You will invest in career development and growth for all of your team members through individual support and coaching
- You will foster a healthy, inclusive environment that boosts productivity, collaboration, creativity, and technical growth for engineers
- You will build partnerships and collaborate with stakeholders across the messaging space, spanning multiple departments within the organization
- You will collaborate with Engineering Leads and Product Managers to craft, refine & communicate technical strategy to the team
- You will be accountable to the performance of engineers who will report into you and the hiring of new engineers who will enhance your team
- You will work with other managers and leads throughout the organization to help improve the overall engineering culture
- You will report to the Senior Engineering Manager over Messaging Platforms
Basic Qualifications:
- 2+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager
- 5+ years of full-stack software development experience
- Experience with engineering best practices and promoting solid Agile software development practices in a self-organizing team
- You are passionate about setting your team up for success using tools such as Agile, Lean, and DevSecOps
- You have hired, onboarded, and coached all levels of engineers
- Passing knowledge of infrastructure and have worked on projects that ran in GCP or AWS
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience leading platform teams
- Familiarity with data architecture
- Experience managing 3rd-party platforms & integrations
- Demonstrated experience advocating for and facilitating continuous improvement and learning
- Demonstrated experience driving delivery for complex, cross-functional initiatives
- Experience developing new ways of solving technical and project-delivery workflows through broader pattern recognition
- Experience working with backend and feature teams to ensure the adoption of platform tooling
