Position Details:
As the Engineering Manager for Product Matching, you will shape newly formed teams responsible for enhancing the product matching capability at Grainger. You will be the driving force behind people, process, and delivery and work with Product Management, Data Science, and the Business to ensure the product matching capability is available to Grainger teams.
You will manage teams of Software Engineers and Data Engineers and report to the Senior Director of Search and Merchandising Engineering.
About Product Matching: Product matching refers to the ability to quickly create product associations between products within Grainger and our competitor's assortment. This capability is enabled by a platform comprised of a business application written in Java, API end points, data processing in Spark, and machine learning services.
Responsibilities Include:

  • Team leadership: Lead software and data engineers. Build a collaborative and engineering team.
  • Technical coaching: Provide technical guidance to team members with code reviews and partner programming. Foster an understanding of best practices, coding standards, and architectural principles.
  • Feature Prioritization and Delivery: Collaborate with Product and Data Science partners to prioritize features and guide delivery timelines.
  • Engineering Effectiveness: Nurture a culture of continuous improvement. Identify opportunities to enhance development processes, increase efficiency, and deliver high-quality software.
  • Monitor and metrics: Implement and oversee a system for monitoring the health of the Matching platform. Ensure performance aligns with expectations and benchmarks.
  • Resource planning and allocation: Plan and allocate resources within engineering teams, taking skillsets, project requirements, and timelines to increase productivity and deliverables.
  • Establish clear communication channels and ensure understanding between engineering teams, architecture, data science, and product.
  • Risk management: Identify and assess potential risks related to product matching development and implement strategies to mitigate these risks to provide a smooth and reliable release cycle.


You Have:
5+ years of relevant experience, including at least 2 years of engineering management experience.

  • Demonstrated experience working with analytics or data science teams in building or deploying data intensive applications.
  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or related study or equivalent project-related experience. Master's degree.
  • Ability to make decisions in an enterprise environment with a diverse set of partners.
  • Ability to use data to make decisions about the work and process improvements.
  • Ability to conduct performance conversations.
  • Collaboration with team members, team members, and vendors. Experience working with our contractors and managing vendors.
