Engineering Manager, New Initiatives

Our mission at Duolingo is to develop the best education in the world and make it universally available. We started by building the Duolingo app, which is now the most popular language-learning app in the world with over 500 million users and over half a billion exercises completed daily.

In New Initiatives we develop products to expand beyond the core language learning application. Example products include Duolingo Events for practicing real-life conversation and Duolingo ABC for learning to read and write.

As an Engineering Manager you will have the opportunity to grow as a software engineer, engineering leader and entrepreneur. In this role, you’ll join Duolingo’s rapidly growing engineering organization to lead some of the company’s most innovative projects from end to end, collaborate on product and business strategy and lead world-class engineers.

You Will...

• Lead engineering on a team developing a new product
• Collaborate with product managers, designers and marketers
• Find opportunities and deliver on projects that have significant impact on the team’s most important metrics
• Develop and evolve product strategy with co-leads and senior leadership
• Mentor and grow team engineers by leading by example and supporting career development
• Identify opportunities and tools to help the team move at a fast pace

You Have...

• Experience in leading a software engineering team and setting technical direction
• Experience working across job functions (design, product, marketing)
• Experience developing zero to one projects
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• B.A./B.S. in Computer Science or a related field

Exceptional Candidates Will Have...

• Experience in fast-growing, consumer-facing, data-driven startups, ideally mobile app based
• Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or a related field
