Job Description

About Us:

We're on a mission to make it possible for every person, team, and company to be able to tailor their software to solve any problem and take on any challenge. Computers may be our most powerful tools, but most of us can't build or modify the software we use on them every day. At Notion, we want to change this with focus, design, and craft.

We've been working on this together since 2016, and have customers like Pixar, Mitsubishi, Figma, Plaid, Match Group, and thousands more on this journey with us. Today, we're growing fast and excited for new teammates to join us who are the best at what they do. We're passionate about building a company as diverse and creative as the millions of people Notion reaches worldwide.

About The Role:

At its core, Notion builds software that empowers customers to solve their own problems. We deliver customers, creators, and developers a set of building blocks that enable them to make software to solve their own problems, the way they want. As such, Notion can be used for almost anything: for writing and sharing docs, as a wiki, for managing projects and tasks, and more.

The Platform Engineering team is focused on making Notion a much more extensible product across a few different areas— our developer API, enabling other third party partners to build their own Notion blocks, and creating new extensible product features to power up our Notion toolmaking community.

In this role you’ll lead and manage a team of engineers to build more advanced product features with extensibility in mind. We’re looking for someone who likes thinking both about developer interfaces and deep product questions. You’ll have the opportunity to jointly set the team’s strategy and mission, collecting feedback and working closely with cross functional partners, and ultimately helping turn Notion’s product into a rich platform and thriving ecosystem of toolmakers.

What You'll Achieve:
  • Develop a solid mental model of the overall product, its future direction, and work cross-functionally to guide platform features current and emerging business needs.
  • Be responsible for maintaining a high quality bar for everything your team supports.
  • Facilitate planning—the prioritization, sequencing, and staffing of work—for your team. You'll work with others to shape how Notion's engineering organization operates, develop our technical practices, build recruiting and onboarding strategies, and more.
  • Recruit, coach, and develop engineers; you'll ensure engineers are regularly receiving feedback and making progress on personal and professional goals.
Skills You'll Need to Bring:
  • Platform manager: You have managed an engineering team before and know how to set up engineers for career growth and technical development. You also have experience either building developer facing products or thinking about building products for builders.
  • Technically hands-on: You enjoy solving people and organizational challenges, but are also able to contribute to a technical roadmap foreseeing general scaling challenges before they happen
  • Commitment to diversity: You have built and are committed to building diverse and inclusive teams; you value empathetic and direct communication and foster environments that are at once collaborative, empowering, supportive, and challenging—ones where people do their best work.
  • Startup mentality: You are comfortable navigating the fast moving, unstructured nature of a hyper-growth startup. You are self-motivated to add value and bias towards action. You understand the importance of setting the engineering quality bar for the long term success of our business, but are able to make difficult prioritizations.
  • Pragmatic and business-oriented: You care about business impact and prioritize projects accordingly. You don't just go after cool stuff—you understand the balance between craft, speed, and the bottom line. To you, technologies and programming languages are about tradeoffs. You may be opinionated, but you're not ideological and can learn new technologies as you go.
Nice to Haves:
  • You have lead or managed engineering teams at startups before, particularly during periods of rapid growth and organizational change.
  • You're able to think about product, business and organizational challenges, in additional to technical engineering challenges.
  • You've heard of computing pioneers like Ada Lovelace, Douglas Engelbart, Alan Kay, and others—and understand why we're big fans of their work.
  • You have interests outside of technology, such as in art, history, or social sciences.

We hire talented and passionate people from a variety of backgrounds because we want our global employee base to represent the wide diversity of our customers. If you’re excited about a role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every bullet point listed in the job description, we still encourage you to apply. If you’re a builder at heart, share our company values, and enthusiastic about making software toolmaking ubiquitous, we want to hear from you.
